Since we are talking about the town of Peach Orchard, I wonder: Does anyone know about a place in the late 1920s called "Mary Jane Peach Orchard?" My parents always told me they were going to name me Mary Jane, but changed their mind because there was a peach orchard by that name and they were afraid I would be teased. Instead, they named me "Mary Sue." I thought it was over by Campbell, Missouri but I am not sure. Thanks for any help. Mary Sue Shy Anton, New Madrid native
The ditch numbering was part of one of the largest drainage projects in the US. An interesting but brief description is given at: http://www.gideon.k12.mo.us/town/river3.htm Glen Thompson of Albuquerque NM. I grew up between Portageville and Hayti on the road that went from old Hiway 61 to Wolf Bayou (now called BB, I think). Graduated Wardell High in 1950. notiz@inebraska.com wrote: >Thanks.for.posting.this.info...I`ve.wondered.where.Peach.Orchard.was. >located..My.grandfather.farmed.east.of.Parma..and.in.the.late.40s.I. >went.with.him.once.when.his.tenant.family.wanted.to.go.pick.peaches. >I.was.a.small.child.and.it.seemed.so.far.away...he`d.return.when.they. >were.needed..to.help.his.family.on.the.farm..they.were.with.him.for. >years.and.this.was.a.yearly.trek. >I.also.have.a.question....about.the.numbered.ditches.that.seemed.to. >have.been.built.for.drainage..all.were.called.by.it.a.number.except. >for.a.larger.one.called.Floodway.and.one.between.Floodway.and.the. >town.of.Parma.....one.was.called.Wally.Ditch....how.did.it.get.it`s.name? >again.I`m.going.by.a.childs.memory....I`ve.only.been.back.twice.in. >over.50.years....excuse.all.the..space.key.is.shot. > > > > > > > > >Quoting "Don E. My grandmother would be thrilled to sit down with you and give you a full history of the Stillmans in Peach Orchard, and I could give you the names of a few other old timers who were here when Peach Orchard was still up at the county line (it didn't move to the current location until the Stillmans came in and built the gin and store). I know that Dunn was named for the family that once owned land there, but I've been told the last Dunn left in the 1940s, and the area has been called Crossroads since. You'd probably want to talk to James Plunkett about Possum Trot. He's also a great source of information on Peach Orchard. Also, my mother has a copy of a Peach Orchard history someone put together for a family reunion (not ours), and my cousin is working on a family history that obviously includes a lot of PO history.

Is there anything written about the early history of Peach Orchard? Does anyone know the town's origin? Does anyone have any information on the history of the Stillman Gin, church, school, post office or businesses at Peach Orchard? I have come across a few things in my research of Gideon, but would love to hear more. I would also like to know if anyone has information on the areas of Dunn, Glendale, Possum Trot or North Island near Peach Orchard. Lyle Randolph

It was a fairly notorious spot during Peach Orchard's heyday, and the story is that there was nothing one couldn't get there. My office window looks over the spot where it used to stand, and we've planted peach trees (the first in Peach Orchard) on the spot.
Is anyone else on this list researching this family? John (b.1822, SC - d.1881, MO or TN) was the son of James FIELDS and Julia ALLISON of Dyer County, TN. Lucy b.1845, VA, d. 1927, Pemiscot County, MO) was the daughter of George David Washington JENNINGS and Sarah MARKS of VA. John and Lucy were my greatgrandparents. They were married in 1876 in Dyer County, TN. Their three children were born in Gayoso, Pemiscot County, MO, but the family was back in Dyer County, TN in the 1880 census. I'm looking for the name of John's first wife (S.A.E. in the 1850 Dyer County census, A.E. in the 1860 census) the names of all of his children by his first wife and his burial place.
