Just recently I found out my great grandparents Fowlers might be buried there. I didn't know for sure where it was located. Your right it is a shame that they are not cared for. I wish I lived down in the area and maybe could get some people to go out to clean it up. The same thing happens to the Culp cemetery outside of Braggadocio. Evelyn Libhart

    1. [MOPemiscot] Re: earthquake fatalities
    2. This is in re to comments and queries by eboli and manton: The names listed; Mrs. LaFont, died of fright and Mrs. Jarvis, killed by a falling log: Would like to know the exact source of those names. Many years ago there was a large map of Reelfoot Lake which, as we know, was created by the quake on the wall of the TN State Park that listed a Mrs. Ruddell/Ruddle as a casualty. I have never been able to trace the source of that statement so do not know which Mrs. Ruddell this is supposed to be. Also, the Mrs. Jarvis may have been Fanny Ruddell Jarvais, daughter of John Ruddell/Ruddle who m. Francois Jarvais or possibly Francois's mother. I have always assumed that Fanny was still alive in 1829 when she is named with her husband in John Ruddle's will, but maybe not? Does any one know? In the few notes that I've seen on casualties, some people that were injured, older or sick died during the winter months after the initial quake from exposure to the elements, maybe even more than during the actual quake itself. They were living in tents as no one wanted to be caught inside a dwelling when the aftershocks continued for the next 6 months. One I seem to recall, was Godfrey or Francoise LeSeiur. George Ruddell lead all but a few folks in Little Prairie (Caruthersville) out safely. Please forward any copy, sources or references to the New Madrid quake, as I'm interested in collecting these stories. Thanks much, B. Merryman

    1. [MOPemiscot] roll call: Allen, Anderson, Marsh, McJunkin, Newton, Ruddell/R...
    2. L. - Thanks for sending the Ruddle cem. pics. I moved several years ago and haven't checked thru very much of my gen. records don't know for sure if I still have that set since they were made probably 25 years ago. Some records were also lost in a fire several years before I moved. Did you make this set fairly recently? Yes, I remember the name "Linda" and have just looked at my MIss. River Navigation maps to refresh. The 3 cemeteries, Ruddle, Gervin and Riddle are indicated as are the grain elevators, Ruddles Pt. dikes running out into the River and the Linda Land Terminal light at mile 875.7 ---- the River is ever changing and probably this book of 1990 Corps of Eng. maps is somewhat out of date now, but the area has become more stable than it use to be. The day I was there was using the USGS maps which indicate every cem. by a cross and in some cases there was only one grave left in the middle of a field here and there, probably many more lost to cultivation. I was told by locals the largest cemetery in the Stewart area out from Hayward (below Linda) had been totally destroyed by the land owner; bulldozed stones into a "low spot." That's supposed to be illegal in MO, but it has to be reported and apparently that one wasn't. Wish everyone would be as thoughtful as you, to record what they see, even though they are not related. Again, thanks for taking the time to send the pics. B. Merryman former Portageville resident

    3. I found this on a search for George I. Coleman - he is (I think) my great great grandfather. Maybe someone can use the other info I found with it. Coleman's father Peter Coleman? Interesting - I hope this info helps someone else. Let me know. 3. GENSEEKERS aka FAMILY GENSEEKERS is up to their fraudulent tricks again. DON'T fall for the "5 Day free trial". There have been a couple dozen unresolved complaints against them at the BBB. Victims either don't get a password to get into the GENSEEKERS' site or if they do, they find only links to free sites. GENSEEKERS has no content of their own. You will not be able to cancel within the five days (email bounces and phone goes unanswered). Friendly warning.
