Was he buried in Pemiscot Co? If a Blytheville, Arkansas, funeral home handled the arrangement, the obit might be listed in the newspaper there. Are you sure of the date? Also, there was no listing in the Mt Zion Cemetery Records. Did he have a tombstone?

However I now, at long last, know how the town got its name! It's not from ducks, or turtles, or even plowblades. The "Encyclopedia of Missouri" says Cooter was named Coutre in 1854 in honor of the Coutre family of New Madrid, one of whom was a merchant there in 1795. "Houck's History of Missouri" identifies that merchant as Portell Coutre. P.S. I believe that "Cooter Lake" that Tom Cassidy referred to is the Lake Farm that used to cover a lot of this area.

    1. [MOPemiscot] 1930 Pemiscot County Census on Ancestry
    2. Carol Carlson
    3. I have a full membership with Ancestry for their census. I wondered how many of you have found errors on the census. The 1930 Census has 31 districts listed. I was very excited about the 1930 census release since that would be the first time my father would be listed on a census. I went to the library and found him listed on the first page of the Census for Wardell Mo. I made copies and was so excited and could not wait to research the rest of the district at home on Ancestry. District 21 says LITTLE RIVER TWP. EXCLUDING WARDELL TOWN. A lot of the districts list what they include and what they exclude. If they exclude a town, then that town has its own listing, except for Wardell. Wardell town is not included in any of the districts for Pemiscot. I know it exists because I saw it at the library and made copies of the page my father was on. The real importance of this issue is that I know the census is wrong, but what about other people that look in the census hoping to find a relative and don't. A lot of them might give up and think that their relative just didn't live in Wardell after all. I reported this error to Ancestry twice. Either they don't believe me or they just don't care. It has been three months and nothing has been changed, even though the census for Mo says 100% completion. I will keep after them about this, I just wanted to let you all know what I found. 1. [MOPemiscot] Rosenwald, Julius schools for blacks
    2. Does anyone know if any "Rosenwald" black schools were ever built in southeast Missouri? Between 1913 and 1932, Julius Rosenwald was instrumental in having 5,300 schools constructed in "the South." Sometimes, but not always, the name Rosenwald became part of the school's nomenclature. Many were built in the state of Texas, and I have heard that there was one in Madisonville, Kentucky. Rosenwald later served as president of Sears, Roebuck and Co. He became a wealthy man. To be eligible for a Rosenwald school, a community had to donate 2 acres of land plus labor to build the school (thus, white residents plus African-Americans contributed to the effort). I understand that the Rosenwald fund made up about a third of the total outlay. These schools were subsequently deeded to the local school district. Any information on these schools would be appreciated. Mary Sue Anton, New Madrid native
