    3. Jean I had to get out my source material to answer your question. There was a notice of my grandmas death in the Ozark Co Times but I got the information from The State Historical Society of Missouri. Their address is 1020 Lowry St , Columbia , Missouri, 65201-7298. Phone # is 573-882-7083 e-mail is shsofmo@umsystem.edu website http://www.system.missouri.edu/shs fax: 573-884-4950 The fee was very small. Back in the early 1900 obits were listed in among other notices. In my Grandmas case their was a notice of someone returning from a trip just befor her obit and just after her obit was a notice of a sale. So unlike today the researcher must scan the entire paper, It will be helpful if you can give the Historical Society as much info as possible. ANd in Grandmas case it just mentioned she was the wife of Jess Bennett , didn`t even give her name. Hope this helps--good luck -- Donna

    3. Hi: Don't be surprised if you can't find a death certificate for anyone who died in a rural area anywhere in the U. S. in the early 1920's (and maybe even later). Many states were not in full compliance on filing birth/death certificates until 1930. One of my great grandmothers died in Ozark County, MO, in 1925, but the State of MO cannot locate a death certificate for her. Some people didn't feel that they had the money (and probably didn't) to pay a doctor to fill out and file a death certificate, so the family would wash the deceased, put clean clothes on them, build a coffin for them and quietly bury them, frequently in an unmarked grave. This happened quite a lot in remote areas, especially if there was no doctor in attendance at the time that the individual died. Good luck on locating an obituary for your ancestor. 3. Just found my great great grandfather, William Riley Potter, in the 1920 census, living with his eldest daughter, Sarah Jane (first husband was a Hancock - anyone know who?), in Jackson (Ozark) MO. I have not been able to locate Wm Riley in the 1910 census. I know he died in 1922 but do not know the month/day. I always thought he died in Texas, since that is where he is buried (White Deer, Carson Co) along with his wife who died in 1918, but the Bureau of Vital Statistics for TX did not have a death certificate. He must have died in Missouri? Am sure I could request a death certificate from Missouri, but would it be possible to get an obituary? Where would be the best place to request one from 1922 in Ozark Co? Any help or direction would be most appreciated! This John is not from my direct line, he may be a "distant cousin" but I have no information on him. I did see in the 1910 census the mother of John's wife Mary and the mother of Delphia Fields were both born in Illinois. It makes you wonder if Delphia is Mary's cousin. Wish I could be of more help but I just don't have anything on this John Hensley. Rachel

    2. Russ, Thank you for all your help. I did find Emaline Casey with Leander McKinney and her siblings with William R McKinney. I also finally was able to find Levi Casey in the 1870 census, he was listed as Levy Casey. There sure is a lot of people in Ozark Co connected through marriage. You may recall that Henson Casey's son Josiah Curtis Casey married Nancy Jane Carroll (my great aunt) Henson's sons William Hensley Casey and Thomas Abraham Casey married daughters of my great aunt, Annis (Hensley) Lane. William R. McKinney's son, Charles, married my great aunt, Maggie Hensley. Again, thank you so much for your help. Rachel
