Obit., mid-Missouri newspaper, 1942: " William Mertens, Luystown, departed this life at St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City Thursday evening (February 1942) at the age of 76 years, 11 months, and 8 days. He was born at Loose Creek, Feb. 17, 1865, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Mertens. He was married 54 years ago to Miss Catherine Jaegers at Loose Creek, who survives. Other survivors are: Theresa (Mrs. Leo Lock) and Anna (Mrs. Martin Schaefer) and Amerial (Mrs. Bruce Stiesmeyer), all of Luystown and one son, Walter Mertens of Linn. He had been a member of the Frankenstein Catholic church."
