Obit. mid-Missouri newspaper, July 1943: "Catharine Marie Mertens, widow of the late Hy Mertens, departed this life at the family home south of Linn, July 27th. She was born at Frankenstein, Mo., on December 10th, 1869, the daughter of Michael and Margaret Mengwasser. On Feb. 6th, 1893, she was united in marriage to Henry Mertens, the first wedding to be performed in the new Frankenstein Catholic church. Their union was blessed with 3 sons and 3 daughters, they are: Michael, Stephen and Miss Agatha of the home near Linn; Mrs. John Schaefer, Jr., Bonnots Mill; and Mrs. John Rehagen of Linn. One son preceded her in death in 1919, as did her husband six years ago, July 6. She is survived by six grandchildren and 4 sisters, they are: Mrs. Hy Luecke, Rich Fountain; Mrs. Jos. Reichel, Freeburg; Mrs. Geo. Rudroff, Freeburg; and Sister Mary Lutgard, O. S. B. of Creston, Iowa. Mrs. Mertens was a member of the Married Ladies Sodality of St. George's Church. Funeral services were in charge of Morton Funeral Home of Linn. Her funeral was conducted last Friday morning from St. George's Catholic Church, Linn with the pastor, Rev. G. H. Schmidt officiating at the Requiem Mass. Burial was in the new parish cemetery. The pallbearers who served for the occasion were: Anton Rustemeyer, Gerard and Wm. Voss, George Rudroff, F. Riegel and A. Krieg."
