Obit., mid-Missouri newspaper, 1977: " Herman A. Backes, 71, of Loose Creek, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 1, 1977. Mr. Backes was born Oct. 27, 1905, at Loose Creek, the son of Anton B. and Agnes Haslag Backes. He was married April 17, 1928, at Loose Creek, to Elizabeth Rustemeyer, who survives at the home. He was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Loose Creek and a member of the holy Name Society of that parish. He was a patent medicine dealer in Osage County for 25 years and was also employed in the poultry processing business in Loose Creek. Other survivors include; four sons, Bernard A. Backes, St. Thomas; Hugo Backes, Rt. 3, Jefferson City; Herbert J. and John P. Backes, both of Loose Creek; three daughters, Mrs. Herman Haslag, California; Mrs. Charles L. Haslag, Linn; and Mrs. Louis Schepers, Jefferson City. Five brothers, the Rev. Hugo Backes, Garrison, N. D.; the Rev. Charles Backes, Mandan, N. D.; the Rev. Raymond Backes, Carson, N. D.; Lawrence and Adolph Backes, both of Loose Creek; three sisters, Sister Antonice Backes, St. Charles; Mrs. Howard Volk, Joplin; and Mrs. Herbert Williams, Loose Creek; and 37 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Loose Creek. Concelebrating at the services were Mr. Backes' three brothers and the pastor Rev. John Buchanan. Burial was in the parish cemetery."
Interested in knowing if son John P. Backes is person was married to Joyce Oligschlaeger who died in 2001, her obituary follows. Joyce B. Backes, 52, Loose Creek, died Feb. 21, 2001, at St. Marys Health Center. She was born June 13, 1948, in St. Elizabeth, a daughter of George and Emma Kemna Oligschlaeger. She was married Nov. 1, 1976, to John Backes, who survives at the home. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Loose Creek. She was also a past national president of American Public Human Services Association. She was employed by the Missouri Department of Social Services as the director of the Division of Data Processing until her retirement last October. Other survivors include: three sons, Brian Stegeman, Loose Creek, Mike Backes, Jefferson City and Marcus Backes, St. Charles; one daughter, Jena Backes, Loose Creek; two brothers, Fred Oligschlaeger, Seattle, Wash., and Norbert Oligschlaeger, Salinas, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Ann Turner, Savannah, and Evelyn Buschjost, St. Thomas; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church in Loose Creek. The Rev. Gregory Meystrik will officiate. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Morton Funeral Home in Linn.
