    2. Mary E. Stigler
    3. Obit., June, 1980 - mid-Missouri newspaper; " The George Werner obituary barely made the deadline last week. Would like to add a few additional memories. George was the son of August and Gertrude Lueckenhoff Werner. He and his brother-in-law, August Lueckenhoff, owned and operated a general mercantile store in the days when eggs, butter and chickens were traded for household needs, once could buy a yard of flannel for a nickel, etc. After George finished high school in Westphalia, he took a business course in St. Louis. Later traveled for Wulfrum Grocery Co. and this is when he met Emma Ortbals. A short time later, in fact in January of 1914, both Mr. Lueckenhoff and Mr. Werner died. This meant George had to come home and run the store along with Alois Werner and Jim Fennewald. George and Emma were married and stayed in the business until he sold his partnership to Eugene, another, brother, in the twenties, and then moved back to St. Louis. Mr. Werner was a charter member of the local Knights of Columbus and he was also a staunch democratic politician in his day. In behalf of his old acquaintances, we extend our sympathy to Emma, son, William and daughter, Alice."
