Hello Marie, Well you are the second to ask on this Oregon Co., Mo. list, so guess I will send this one to the list. First of all, you will need a phone book to call or you can write to them, any courthouse in any county within any state, ask them if their probate files go back to the date that you need. Some of the Missouri counties courthouses have burned in the past, sometimes during the Civil War, and then their files in the courthouse are not complete. So before your write or call or drive 100's of miles, a researcher should always "check the land" and what records are availalble there. I use a book "The Handy Book For Genealogists" published by The Everton Publishers, Inc., P O Box 368, Logan, Utah 84321. It shows every county within every state and foreign countries also, tells what records are available in our courthouses and if the courthouse was burned in the past with all records or partial records. And this book also tells what is available when you are ready to do foreign country research. I have called this book my "bible" for doing my research for many many years, 34 to be exact. I never go anywhere without checking it first. If a courthouse has burned with all the records, you are wasting time and money to go there. Of course if you go there to look at all the cemeteries in a county, then that is different. But - if you can find the probate record for that person at the courthouse level, it may even have the name of the cemetery that he or she was buried in, and look at the time and money you have saved. (IF - the book says that the courthouse is complete record wise and has not burned in the past, we must consider ourselves very fortunate.) Good luck in your searches, and Merry Christmas. J.
