Your book will say that the Oregon County, MO courthouse was burned...but be sure that the records are there. I have gotten many records from the Oregon County, MO courthouse but mostly through the Genealogical Society/Historical Society who is based at the courthouse in Alton, MO. The town is so very tiny that just sending requests to the Society at the courthouse gets too them. The library, across the street on the square, is also a wonderful source of information. We city folk just don't realize how much a little area cares about their history. If the probate records are there someone will find them for you. I even got my father's adoption records by ordering a probate record. You can write to the Oregon County Genealogical Society % County Courthouse, Alton, MO 65606 or just write to the Courthouse and County records. Someone will help you. Remember to enclose a self addressed stamped envelope for them too answer back. The first time I asked for information they did it for free, but from then on there was a charge. If you have a lot of records to request it pays to join the society. Pat Miller Dallas,TX Jeanette Henson McClure <[email protected]> wrote: Hello Marie, Well you are the second to ask on this Oregon Co., Mo. list, so guess I will send this one to the list. First of all, you will need a phone book to call or you can write to them, any courthouse in any county within any state, ask them if their probate files go back to the date that you need. Some of the Missouri counties courthouses have burned in the past, sometimes during the Civil War, and then their files in the courthouse are not complete. So before your write or call or drive 100's of miles, a researcher should always "check the land" and what records are availalble there. I use a book "The Handy Book For Genealogists" published by The Everton Publishers, Inc., P O Box 368, Logan, Utah 84321. It shows every county within every state and foreign countries also, tells what records are available in our courthouses and if the courthouse was burned in the past with all records or partial records. And this book also tells what is available when you are ready to do foreign country research. I have called this book my "bible" for doing my research for many many years, 34 to be exact. I never go anywhere without checking it first. If a courthouse has burned with all the records, you are wasting time and money to go there. Of course if you go there to look at all the cemeteries in a county, then that is different. But - if you can find the probate record for that person at the courthouse level, it may even have the name of the cemetery that he or she was buried in, and look at the time and money you have saved. (IF - the book says that the courthouse is complete record wise and has not burned in the past, we must consider ourselves very fortunate.) Good luck in your searches, and Merry Christmas. J. Hello Pat, Yes, I have been to the courthouse there. I am glad that you put this on the site for folks to see. We all need to know what is available....like you I have found things in courthouses that surprised me by being there. That is like finding a gold mine once in awhile. Iron Co., MO. where I am from is the same way, they have a small library, also, with a room of genealogy books that is just great. And their courthouse records are complete. And yes, everyone should be able to be proud and knowledgeable of the place where they reside or resided. Thank You. Jeanette. Janette, Ah, now you really interest me. My father's oldest sister was placed in a home in Greenville, MO in about 1914. The foster family name was Hunter and I can find nothing about them. Her name was Pearly Mary Jane Reilley/Riley and her parents died in 1913-1914 in Oregon County, MO. I know who she married, but nothing about her from 1914 until I found her in about 1928-9 living in Cape Girardeau, MO, already married to Eddie Crow. (found in a probate record and then on a census) There doesn't seem to be any records about her in Oregon Co except a 1910 census. Their father put the kids up for adoption and she wasn't adopted. Let me know how to find info in Iron County. Pearly's husband's aunt told me this about her. After I found one of my Riley great aunts still living, she said that Pearly was taken north and raised there. Pearly died in 1931 and is buried in Poplar Bluff, MO. Hello Pat, Having all the books that have been published, published some of them my self, of Iron Co., MO. I will look in there for you for her. But you probably would not find her in a probate record unless you searh Oregon Co., and find her parents probate record. If she had property when living in Poplar Bluff, Mo. the probate record for her would be there in Butler County courthouse, but it looks as if by your note - that she left there.. But if I remember that courthouse, after being there, It was not complete on their records....and that is one of the counties that the Everton book has no info about the records there. I checked the 1910,1920-1930 census of Iron Co., Mo. and did not find her name, there are a couple Riley-Reilly families there but no mention of her. Also, she was not in the marriages there from 1900 through 1933. But Iron Co., Mo. has several sites on the computer, and you might look in there and leave a query with them. Of course, you know that Poplar Bluff is in Butler Co., Mo. Also you might try ordering her death certificate from Missouri Vital Statistices, Deaths and Births in Jefferson City, MO. they also have a site in the computer. I have odered many from them, deaths mostly, it always has listed where they were buried within that county. Wish I could help you more. Have a good CHRISTmas. J. The Oregon County Courthouse was burnt during the Civil War. However the records were removed before hand and hid in a cave and were spared. When I was in Alton a few years back, they were packing up the records to have them microfilmed and moved to a new storage. I think someone mentioned that the microfilming was completed. Was the microfilming for local use or for the Family History Library in Salt Lake? Last summer I was at the courthouse and looked up records out of the old books. No mention of microfilm being available. I would have liked to know about that. Pat Miller Gene Phillips <[email protected]> wrote: The Oregon County Courthouse was burnt during the Civil War. However the records were removed before hand and hid in a cave and were spared. When I was in Alton a few years back, they were packing up the records to have them microfilmed and moved to a new storage. I think someone mentioned that the microfilming was completed. > >Gene > >At 09:46 PM 12/15/2005, PAT MILLER wrote: >>Your book will say that the Oregon County, MO courthouse was burned...but be sure that the records are there. >> Pat Miller >> Dallas,TX >> >>Jeanette Henson McClure wrote: >> Hello Marie, Well you are the second to ask on this Oregon Co., Mo. list, so >>guess I will send this one to the list. >>First of all, you will need a phone book to call or you can write to them, >>any courthouse in any county within any state, ask them if their probate >>files go back to the date that you need.
