    3. Norma, The records in Lawrence Co., AR belong in Lawrence Co. Lawrence Co. was the mother county for many of the counties in the area, including Oregon. Orebon Co. did not become a county until 1845 [split off from Ripley]. Lawrence Co., AR is the hub of the wheel. The rest of the counties around that area, are the spokes of the wheel. Not a dumb question at all! Lanita

    3. Hi, The one-room FAIRVIEW SCHOOL was located just east of Myrtle. I know that the school was in use in 1902. I am interested in determining the span of years when the school served the families living east of Myrtle. If you know of a date when the school was "in session" before or after 1902, please post the date. Working together, perhaps we can approximate the date when students first began attending school at FAIRVIEW, and the date when the last class attended FAIRVIEW. This should provide all of us with families who lived in that area a little more information about where the children attended school. While we're discussing schools in the Myrtle area, does anyone on the list know anything about schools that might have served the area east of Myrtle before Fairview School was built, or after use of Fairview School was discontinued? Thanks, Mike Landwehr

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CMB.2ACE/585 Message Board Post: From: Lloyd Clark at [email protected] MS Smith, Thank you for your email/letter. I am President of the Lawrence County Historical Society. I (and we the society) share your concern and outrage. We have worked with the parks department to try to get a better solution and one may be in the offing. First, the records will be preserved. The questions are when and where? Right now they are safely ensconced in the archives department at the ASU library in Jonesboro. The university has been very generous in letting us store them there till we could move back into the newly refurbished courthouse. But, the Parks folks don't seem to want us there any more even though we are the reason they exist at all. They spent 1.2 million on the refurbishment and not a dime on dehumidifiers or proper shelving for the vaults. They never intended for the records to be returned it seems. At the last moment they offered the little white wooden church building but the immediate and loud protests by the society and folks such as yourself have caused them to rethink their position. They have now offered to build a suitable, fire and storm proof vault next to the church to house the records. Catch is- we have to cede control and ownership of the records to the Arkansas History Commission which will allegedly pay an archivist to do the job Mrs. Flippo did so well for so many years. We are promised a binding legal agreement which will guarantee the records stay in Lawrence County. And they say they can't get funding till next year, if then, so nothing will be built in the next 2 or 3 years and the records will stay in Jonesboro till then. I recommend you send a copy of your letter to our Governor, to Mr. Richard Davies Director of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, One Capitol Mall, Little Rock, AR 72201, to Mr. Rex Friedman, Chief Planner, Planning & Development Section -- same address and to state legislators. Get your friends to do so as well. A few letters to the editor of the Arkansas Democrat/Gazette and the Arkansas Times wouldn't hurt either. The Parks people respond to public pressure and negative publicity. Email to: [email protected] or [email protected] They want the space we had for a visitor center, gift shop and offices for their staff. The little white church would be ideal for that purpose. They can't seem to understand that the records were the draw for the park. The LCHS will host a public meeting this Thursday, 7 p.m. at the Powhatan Community Center to inform the public of these latest developments and discuss options. Our primary goal is to preserve the documents properly and make them available for public use as soon as possible. I have discussed a plan with the ASU archivist to make the records more open to the public. He will likely be at the meeting. Parks and History Commission will be invited to attend as well. Many of the records are already on microfilm and available for review at the Telephone Exchange Building at the park. You will have to make an appointment with the park staff for a time though. PLEASE, everyone get involved or the records will eventually be destroyed for lack of climate and 2 and 4 legged vagrant control!! Contact the Governor at: http://www.state.ar.us/governor/staff/index.html#General PLEASE!!! ALL get involved in this or our records will eventually be lost! Lanita

    2. Pat Miller
    3. All, I have been contacted by a Shurron family descendent and she told me that there were people related to the Shurron family living in Oregon Co. as late as 1962. When I receive the newspaper articles I will copy them here to see if anyone might be able to help me find whoever the relatives are. They would probably be my relatives too. Martha Jane Shurron married Clark Francis Fisher. Clark was called Jack F. Fisher. On the 1930 Memphis, TN census it says his mother's language was 66 and his father was born in Midocean. Is there a Fisher or Bearden family in Oregon County that might fit that discription. Pat Dallas,TX

I don't know his parents or when he was born, but I know that Martha was born 1896, so I figure that Robert was probably about her same age. They had 1 child that I know of, Gilbert James Harriell who married a Ruby??? I am trying to determine who Gilbert and Ruby's children are as I have children listed as Mattie, Bartha, David and Juanita but I'm thinking that "Mattie" might actually be Martha. I would also like to know if Robert and Martha had any other children besides Gilbert James Harriell. Thanks.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CMB.2ACE/584 Message Board Post: Oregon County, long ago, before it was split off from Ripley Co. in 1845, was once a part of the area now known as Lawrence County, AR. For many years, the oldest of the old Arkansas and Missouri records were housed safely and securely in the Powhatten Museum in Lawrence County. These records include documents that Lewis and Clark have signed. Now the State has come in and wants to stick them in an old church or other areas. They want to do this on the advisement of an out of state consultant firm. We urge all interested parties, to get involved and express their protest on this matter. We just received this word on another list: I have the latest update on the Powhatan heartache. Talked to Tom Moore (he and his wife have been former Presidents of the Lawrence County Historical Society and are Evelyn Flippo's daughter and son-in-law.) He told us to first go to the Walnut Ridge Times Dispatch website for information from Mr. Lloyd Clark, current President of the Lawrence County Historical Society with directions as to how to help. His email is [email protected] There is going to be a public support meeting on Thursday evening. They are hoping to receive letters of support for the historical information to be put back at Powhatan Museum. All of the historical papers, etc. are at Arkansas State University in the proper environment that is needed to keep them in good shape. (thank goodness) This is a real mess. There are several proposals from the state as to the future of those genealogy records. Some were worried about Evelyn Flippo who has dedicated alot of her life to preserving those records at Powhatan. They tell me she is well and able to be involved with this problem. Let's get busy and get letters out. I think they will take emails. Carolyn Boone PLEASE, we need everyone's help on this matter. Please email and let your feelings be known about this matter. The records HAD been housed in the secure and safe environment until they remodeled the Museum. Locals THOUGHT that the records would be moved back. Now the State Parks and Rec. Dept. wants to stick them in an old church. We need your support NOW. Lanita Sconce Smith

He was arrested for a series of bank robberies that occurred possibly in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri or Arkansas. Hence, the FBI being involved.
