    3. Hello Pat, Greenville is not in Iron Co., Mo. it is in Wayne Co., Mo. Yes, you do not need to send them any info except the name and the approximate date of death, and the place if you know it. They are supposed to check within a 10 year range for the death certificate. AND send it to you if it is on record. They really do need the county the death took place in, I believe. I think they have raised the rate to $15 now, I have not ordered one in quite a while from MO. But I would not even mention adoption, just do the name and the date that you have and the place of death. That is all they need to do a search. Good Luck, Jeanette. This is what I know: Both of her parents died of TB, mother in Nov 1913 and father shortly after that. Before the father died he took all four children to the Children's Home Society of Missouri. My father and his brother were placed in Lawrence County, MO and I have their papers. Daddy was adopted Dept 2, 1914. A.J.Markely placed both of the boys (I can follow him from the adoption time until his death in Springfield, MO). This all came from their uncle's Oregon Co. MO probate records. In this file I found Pearly's married name and where she was living in 1926. From there I found her daughter's location in Poplar Bluff and then found Pearly's admitting to the TB Chest Hospital in Mt. Vernon (Lawrence Co., MO) in 1929; she died there in mid 1931. She is buried in Poplar Bluff. 3. Hello Pat, Having all the books that have been published, published some of them my self, of Iron Co., MO. I will look in there for you for her. But you probably would not find her in a probate record unless you searh Oregon Co., and find her parents probate record. If she had property when living in Poplar Bluff, Mo. the probate record for her would be there in Butler County courthouse, but it looks as if by your note - that she left there.. But if I remember that courthouse, after being there, It was not complete on their records....and that is one of the counties that the Everton book has no info about the records there. I checked the 1910,1920-1930 census of Iron Co., Mo. and did not find her name, there are a couple Riley-Reilly families there but no mention of her. Also, she was not in the marriages there from 1900 through 1933. But Iron Co., Mo. has several sites on the computer, and you might look in there and leave a query with them. Of course, you know that Poplar Bluff is in Butler Co., Mo. Also you might try ordering her death certificate from Missouri Vital Statistices, Deaths and Births in Jefferson City, MO. they also have a site in the computer. I have odered many from them, deaths mostly, it always has listed where they were buried within that county. Wish I could help you more. Have a good CHRISTmas. J. 3. Was the microfilming for local use or for the Family History Library in Salt Lake? Last summer I was at the courthouse and looked up records out of the old books. No mention of microfilm being available. I would have liked to know about that. Pat Miller Gene Phillips <[email protected]> wrote: The Oregon County Courthouse was burnt during the Civil War. 3. Jeanette, You have certainly done your research on Iron County, but I am only looking in the 1914 (when the children were put up for adoption) and the 1926 period when I found her married. From there I ! found her husbands elderly aunt who lives (age 96) in Poplar Bluff and she told me that Pearly (called Mary) was raised in Greenville, Iron Co, by a Hunt family. I have a picture of the other sister, Margaret, and maybe Pearly is the other girl in the picture. Margaret was adopted by a Scott family who was said to be living in Oregon Co., (lost cause there). Would there be any way to trace through Iron County of foster children since two of the childrens' info was in Lawrence Co? The reason I have the adoption papers is because there was a copy sent to Oregon Co., from Lawrence co. to prove the childrens' parentage and that they were heirs to their uncle's estate. Strange things happen. The state of Missouri will not give me death records from an adopted sibling of my father. Do you know any other way to get a death certificate? Or was the person in Jefferson City just being a jerk? Thanks for the help and you have a great Holiday too. Pat Miller Jeanette Henson McClure <[email protected]> wrote: Hello Pat, Having all the books that have been published, published some of them my self, of Iron Co., MO. J. 1. Re: [MOOREGON] Probates

    3. IT is called PROBATE by our courts. The files for a probate (which may contain a will, that the desceased person wrote before he or she died), more folks died without wills, then they are the ones whose property had to be probated by the courts. If a person dies with property (land, jewelry any type of asset.) there will be a probate file at the courthouse done by the court. Usually the person going to the property and doing this work is called an Assessor. And these files are found in the probate court files at all of our courthouses. You have to look in books that contain the information that tells what is available in each of our county courthouses before you travel hundreds of miles to a courthouse, as some have been burned with all records - the best book that I have found is Evertons, as I have stated many many times before. Also the courthouses would appreciate that you know the condition of their records before you write to them requesting a record of any kind - marriage, wills, probates, land etc. because if they have had a burn out, it is fruitless to request any item from them before the burn out, and this is what Evertons book tells us, if the courthouse records exist and if they do not. I call this book my "bible" for my research. Everton Publishers, Inc., P O Box 368, Logan, Utah 84321. They have a site on your computer. And you can ask for a price list from them. Or just mail them. And most good genealogy libraries will have a copy. If not, request your library to order one for their genealogy section. You will be helped very very much with this book. Good luck, and Merry CHRISTmas. J. (Sorry that I repeated myself, but I wish everyone had this book.... Maybe you can pass this on to some of your genealogy friends?? Thanks. ) Jeanette Henson McClure, CG ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ginger Smith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 16, 2005 9:41 AM Subject: [MOOREGON] Probates > Hi Jeanette, Thanks for the information about the book. > > Can someone briefly describe what a "Probate" is. 3. Hi Jeanette, Thanks for the information about the book. Can someone briefly describe what a "Probate" is. This is a very new concept to me as I have never had to deal with any family member estates. Thanks! 3. Your book will say that the Oregon County, MO courthouse was burned...but be sure that the records are there. I have gotten many records from the Oregon County, MO courthouse but mostly through the Genealogical Society/Historical Society who is based at the courthouse in Alton, MO. The town is so very tiny that just sending requests to the Society at the courthouse gets too them. The library, across the street on the square, is also a wonderful source of information. We city folk just don't realize how much a little area cares about their history. If the probate records are there someone will find them for you. I even got my father's adoption records by ordering a probate record. You can write to the Oregon County Genealogical Society % County Courthouse, Alton, MO 65606 or just write to the Courthouse and County records. Someone will help you. Remember to enclose a self addressed stamped envelope for them too answer back. The first time I asked for information they did it for free, but from then on there was a charge. If you have a lot of records to request it pays to join the society. 3. Well, I'm still looking for JOHN DUDLEY KEELING who died in Oregon Co. on October 13, 1875. He was born January 8, 1831. His wife Mary Ann Roden Keeling and 11 children moved on to Barry Co., MO after his death. I have checked every cemetery listed below and to no avail. I understand that there are 2 New Salem Cemeteries. I have had a couple of folks who have tried to help but I just keep running into dead ends. My dad before he died made a trip from NM to Oregon Co. looking for his grave. It sure would be a nice Christmas present if I could find his last resting place. Thanking everyone in advance for any help they can give me. 3. Hello Jane, You might try ordering a copy of his Probate Record from the Courthouse of Oregon Co., it usually does tell where the person was buried at. Let me know if you have found it. I suggest this to a lot of people, and never know if it helps them, I just know that it has helped me many many times in 34 years of doing genealogy research for myself and others. Good Luck, Jeanette.
