He actually drove Indy Cars to be specific. In 1973, he was involved in a fiery wreck at Indianapolis 500 when he got into the catch fence, and then the car cut in half and his legs were sticking out of the tub while the rest of the car was on fire. This was also the David Earl "Swede" Savage, Jr., was killed at the Indianapolis 500.
