Jack Davis, 63, of Dayton, died Sunday, March 4, 2007. Jack was born in Dayton, the son of Giles J. and Katherine V. Davis. Judge Davis graduated from Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City, Ohio in 1961. He attended Bowling Green State University, majoring in chemistry and graduating in 1965. Judge Davis considered medical and dental school before settling on law school after finishing first in the State of Ohio on the LSAT as a walkin registrant. He attended the accelelerated law school program at The Ohio State University College of Law, finishing in 1967 and walking with his graduation class in 1968. Judge Davis immediately began his law practice in Dayton after having been admitted to practice law in all Courts in the State of Ohio, the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and the United States Tax Court. He engaged in the general practice of law while acting as Law Director for the City of Vandalia for 29 years, union attorney for various firefighter locals, including the Dayton Firefighters Local 136, of which he is a lifetime honorary member, assistant attorney general for the State of Ohio, former assistant Montgomery County Prosecutor and former member of the Montgomery County Planning Commission. As a lawyer, Judge Davis was active in the Dayton Bar Association's Ethics Committee and Board of Trustees, acted as trustee of the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers and was a past president of the Ohio Bar Association Young Lawyers Section. He was further a participant in the Dayton Volunteer Lawyers project; ensuring that indigent citizen's rights be protected. Judge Davis was a participant in the Montgomery County Criminal Justice Council and Ohio State Bar Association 2001 Ohio Justice Institute. In 2002, Judge Davis was elected by the citizens to the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division. He continued his participation with various boards and committees, including the Certified Grievance Committee, Criminal Practice Committee, the Committee on Civil Trial Practice and chair of the Public Service Committee. Further, Judge Davis was chair of the court's Jury Management Committee, reducing jury duty for the citizens of Montgomery County from a three week on call group to three days only. Judge Davis has been awarded a special service award from the University of Dayton School of Law for his contributions to the Dayton Legal Community. Judge Davis was a member of St. Johns Lodge of F.&A.M. and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton. Jack is survived by his wife and best friend, Arnette; six children, Jack (Lindsay) of Toledo, Jeff of Venice, CA, Chris (Melissa) of Cincinnati, OH, Trisha Duff (Randy) of Oakwood; Jackie Stefanoff (Jim) of Brookville, and Annie Steele (Evan) of Orlando, FL; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Davis and Richard Davis of Tipp City, and sister, Kathy Davisson of Piqua, OH. Funeral services were held Saturday, Mar. 10, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 E. Thruston Blvd., Oakwood. Interment David's Cemetery.
