Alger was the widow of Dr. Darius Alger according to the Dayton city directories. He appears to have died May 24, 1893 and is listed as Doctor Algers (no first name given) in the death index. He was a veterinary surgeon living at 1217 E. Fifth street when he died, but is listed as "single"? His age was stated as 58 years. Phoebe shows up in Dayton directories listed as his widow starting in 1894. Dr. Alger's practice was located at 1109 E. Fifth street in 1891, an address that I happened to recognize, the current site of the main Dayton post office, location in 1913 of Bodey Hardware (there's a photograph of that address during the flood). It's also just around the corner from work, as are a couple other addresses that he lived or worked at. In 1894, Phoebe was living across the street from where I work.... many of the homes on that street date to the mid 1800's.... I'll have to see if her address still exists. If it's not raining or snowing on Saturday, I may get a chance to run down Fifth street and look for a couple of the locations. >From the 1884-1885 Dayton city directory: ALGER DR. DARIUS, Veterinary Surgeon, has over 25 years Successful Practice; Cures Corns, Contracted Feet and so-called Shoulder Jams, and all Diseases the Horse is heir to, 19 N. St. Clair, Residence, 18 S. Blind (street) The death notice for Phoebe is quite short.... Mrs. Phoebe A. Alger, aged 71, died of asthma this week at her home, 503 Richard street. I didn't have time to look for a notice for Darius as it took me a while to find him in the index. Unlikely that it will mention his wife I think. So I guess we need to determine when we think she may have married Darius, and look for a marriage record? Unless that's where you came across the marriage info, although I guess that would have listed his first name?
