For Wayne Webb; I can recommend some reference material for you about the history of Hawker Church and some other churches related to Rev. David Winters. That is; FAITH OF OUR FATHER, The Story of the Hawker Church, Miriam Engle Allen, Fairway Press, Lima, Ohio, 1994. ISBN 1-55673-951-6. This 280 page, softbound, book is available from the Hawker United Church of Christ, 1617 N. Longview St, Beavercreek, Ohio, 45432. The church phone number is 937-426-0974. The church has an online presence at http://www.hawkerucc.org/index.html Miriam is a retired English teacher and was the historian of Hawker Church for many years. She also is my Engle cousin. On p 47 Miriam writes about the Mt. Zion Charge, a group of four churches all shepherded by David Winters. These were Davids, Hawker, Zion and Mt. Zion. I believe I have read elsewhere maybe in Beers HISTORY OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY that David Winters served other churches as well, perhaps as founding pastor. I just looked in Edgars PIONEER LIFE and found a remark that David Winters had been associated with 13 different churches ( but Edgar did not name them ). In any case, it is clear that the Winters family of German Reformed ministers; father Thomas (1778-1863) and sons Thomas H. and David, were major contributors to religious life in the Miami Valley in the 19th century. Miriam Allen offers a brief glimpse of this family in her history of Hawker Church. DICK FOLKERTH Dallas
