It appears it was published in 1864 and I'm not sure I think he lived in Dayton then. The Dayton city directories indicate that he was James E. or James E.D. Ward.... the second middle initial shows up in later entries. His wife was Martha, she's listed as his widow in 1901-02, but he was still alive in 1895-96... so he died somewhere's inbetween. There's no obit index for that time frame... There might be a death index that goes to 1901 or 1908... didn't have time to check. I'll send you a little directory detail later... he had some interesting jobs. I also found a rather poor photograph in a 1910 newspaper, if the photo I took of it is any good I'll email that to you later also. My father had the book, but it has disappeared, and we believe my Mother accidentally got rid of it. That is some impressive information on the Rossow's.....I foud a match on one-world tree (through me public tree I posted - called Ward Family Tree) for Bertha, looks to be her but I am hesitant to add info if I can't confirm. I believe it said her parents were Father: Jockum Friedrick Rossow (1847-1928) Mother: Mary Augusta Jacobson (1850-1928). Since I do not know whose tree this a from and it does not give me a way to contact them I have not merged it. Giess I should research a little further!!!!
