Re: Elizabeth Nicholas Can anyone solve this mystery? Elizabeth Nicholas married Daniel Repp, Jr. 29 Apr 1852. When Elizabeth died and on her death cert. it states father is Benjamin Nutdera and mother is Algilli Bogerton. Daniel and Elizabeth had a son Charles M. Repp. On Charles' death cert. it states mother is Elizabeth Nicholas. Was Elizabeth married to a Nicholas before marrying Daniel Repp? I cannot find the name Nutdera in any genealogical searches. Daniel Repp, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Roedick Repp are buried in Old Greencastle Cemetery. Janet Mills

I have not found where he immigrated to USA. <snip> Jim in Darke Yes, there is a cemetery there. It is known as Fort McKinley Cemetery. If you view: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/ and enter these values: Feature Name: McKinley Feature Class: Cemetery State or Territory: Ohio County: Montgomery You can then select a topographical, overhead photo, or street map showing the location of Fort McKinley Cemetery. Leaving the 'Feature Name' blank from the above values will show 103 cemeteries in Montgomery County, Ohio. HTH, Chuck
Steve, You said that you and Walt were related to the Nicholas family in Greencastle. By any chance are you related to my 3rd great grandfather: Abraham Nicholas 1804-1877? His parents were William Nicholas (1774-1850) and Rachel Kneisley (1774 - 1854) or at least as far as we know. Happy Fourth of July to all, and take a minute today to remember all those fighting for our freedom, including my son in Baghdad. Vicki Shulman - - - Mesa, Arizona
Hi Listers....Looking for this family related to my wife: Conrad(Konrad) Saul b abt 1800 and may be buried in a cemetery at the intersection(supposedly) of Gettysburg ave and Free Pike.Is there a cemetery there and if so has it been read??? I have not found where he immigrated to USA. In BearCreek cem there is a family plot where son Nicholas and wife Barbara Olt are buried and a stone identified as "mother". It could be that ole Conrad kicked off before his wife Margaret and they were buried in separate places. Any light on this problem is greatly appreciated and I thank you in aqdvance for the light!!!!! Jim in Darke

In the past, before the neighborhood became as scary as it is today, a lady who lived on Alwildy St would unlock the gate for us. We discovered she was a grandmother of a boy I knew in grade school! She has probably passed away by now. Such a shame a cemetery is inaccessible to visitors except for one day a year! I remember the cannon. On Decoration Day there was always a ceremony in the cemetery. My two brothers were Boy Scouts and their troop was the Honor Guard. The ceremony took place by the cannon. This is the area where the Walthers lived so probably some of them are buried there. I remember large monuments with the name of Nicholas on them. The large dark brick house (at least it seemed large when I was little) across from the cemetery was the Leslie/Walther home. That neighborhood shouldn't be a problem unless you're driving around it at night. I used to work in the lower income areas of Dayton, and most of them are pretty safe during the daytime. Your biggest challenge will probably be getting someone to unlock the gate for you. I had 2 great uncles who shared a house on Gettysburg Ave., until Rt 35 was put through and they torn down the house. And even now, there are still areas around there that aren't that bad. Most of the people who live in that area aren't looking for trouble. JED is buried at Old Greencastle cemetery here in Dayton. Unfortunately, that cemetery is only open one day a year (Memorial Day). I was in there for the first time this year.... too bad we weren't looking for him then. Ward, James ED, 1838-1899, born 1839 in NJ, d 3 Oct 1899, Civil War, Pvt, Co H, 12th OVI. section 2, row 19, grave 3 (it appears that he was buried elsewhere in the cemetery at one point and was moved later) There is a Civil War era cannon or mortar in that cemetery, he may be buried near it. JED's wife, Martha Jane, is also there: Ward, Martha Jane, 1838-1910, 72yrs, d 7/25/1910. section 2, row 19 grave 2 I looked for an obit for JED in the Dayton Daily News and couldn't find one. I didn't find him in the Montgomery county death index, but I looked before I found the death date, although I really don't think I missed him. There's another index for Dayton deaths, that the library had misplaced. I really am starting to suspect that he wasn't living in Dayton after about 1896-97, but died elsewhere and was buried here.
