    1. Re: [MONTGOMERY_CO_OH] Cemetery or Estate Look up

    3. Jim, There is a cemetery listing for him but no tombstone to take a picture of. The church cemetery where he is buried had the stones removed some time ago. Contact the Dayton Metro Library in downtown Dayton and ask them to copy the page out of the cemetery book I wrote on Jackson township. Or contact me privately and you can purchase a copy of the book. Jacob Smith lived out in the western portions of the township in 1851 according to tax records. According to my records he may have orginally bought the land from Daniel Hoops according to what I am seeing on my township map and the preiously referenced 1851 tax duplicate for the township. I do not find him in my 1827 or 1830 digitized tax duplicates for the county. He was living in Jackson township in my transcribed 1840 census, but in a different portion of the township. From what I am seeing in studying the 1850 census, and taking notice of the neighbors, it may be that he came from Maryland in about 1836 or so as an already married young man with several other Smiths. In 1840 he only had one child. But by 1850 he now has a second wife and several children by his first wife. From other information, not herein mentioned, I would suspect that the children listed in the 1850 census enumeration are from his first wife. There are several Jacob Smith estates, all of them with wills, but without pulling them I can not determine if one may be your guy or not. I do not pull wills or estates without prior arrangements. 2. Linda Trent. You recently inquired re Dayton/Montgomery County books referring to E. E. Barney. The set of books in question is titled Dayton and Montgomery County. The series of books was written by Charlotte Reeves Conover and published in 1932. You are right about Edward Everett Barney being cited on Page 63. It is found in Vol. III. Eliam E. Barney can be found on pages 104, 344, 470-72, and 642. These pages are in Vol. II. Bill **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. 3. Linda, I checked my typeset and indexed "Centennial Portrait and Biographical Record of the City of Dayton and Montgomery County, Ohio..." (Chicago, Ill.: A. W. Bowen & Co., 1897) and while there are references to your Edward Everett Barney; there are none on the pages that you referenced. I also checked my "History of the City of Dayton and Montgomery County Ohio (Chicago, Ill.: S. J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1909) and did not locate a match either. The 1882 Beers book supplied no hits as well. So what ever book your parents obtained those pages from is a mystery to me. 3. Hi Guys! For years I've heard the story of how my great grandfather came to the U.S. I found his immigration records in the Montgomery County Probate Courts, but that still didn't tell me everything I wanted to know. Family lore always said that his Aunt and Uncle Weiffenbach had returned for a visit to Alsfeld, Germany and told great stories about Dayton, and the U.S. My great grandfather was still under 16, but he dream was to one day come to Dayton and settle down. His parents discouraged this, and told him he was too young to come here, but if he was still determined when he was 16 he could come. The Weiffenbachs returned to Germany in 1887, and did everything within their power to dissuade young Konrad from coming back with them, but it was all in vain. They traveled first class and put Konrad (now Carl Conrad) in steerage. He was going to have a six week journey to the U.S. with no contact with his aunt and uncle, since the two classes couldn't mingle. After arriving in the U.S. the Weiffenbachs continued to discourage Carl from staying, so he joined the German Evangelical Church which offered two services each week, one in German and the other in English. Konrad attended both services making friends and brushing up on his English. I had searched for the ship he came on but with no success. I started to think that perhaps steerage passengers just weren't recorded. Then one day.... I got ancestry.com and found their "U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925." I knew that Carl had returned home for some visits and thought what the heck. I just put in Mueller and Dayton, and up came Carl Conrad -- it gave so many details including his full name, where and when he was born, his father's name, where his father was born and where his father was living (in this case deceased), that he immigrated from Antwerp Belgium on Oct. 1, 1887 and resided 34 years uninterrupted in the US from 1887 to 1922 in Dayton. It told where his naturalization papers could be found (probate court Montgomery County, Dayton), and the date of naturalization, and his occupation at the time, grocer. With this info I went back and looked at ships leaving Antwerp, Belgium and arriving Oct. 12, 1887 and found the Noordland. On board were the Weiffenbachs, and a few pages later I found O.C. Mueller age 16 male Alsfeld, and looking at the actual record I discovered that it wasn't O.C. it was C.C.! And not only that but ancestry.com had a picture of that particular boat! The previous October the beloved lady of the immigrants was errected in the harbor at New York, and when he came Carl Mueller saw the Statue of Liberty. How cool is that, when one can verify oral history after 30 years of searching in vain! And to think I didn't think I'd find anything in the passport applications, but what the heck! New stuff is always coming to surface and we must never give up! Linda Trent lindatrent@zoomnet.net

Hi Carolyn, I think the website is actually a better place for them then this list. I've tried to find things in the archives of rootsweb and it's not particularly easy. I know of a lot of county genealogical websites that include obituaries, in fact I just sent in a number of obituaries to the Gallia CGS site earlier this month. > In fact, I am in the process right now of updating our files and will have > over 200 new obituaries, mostly from the late 1800-early 1900 time frame > ready to upload to the web site within the next few days. If my ancestors aren't included in this batch, I'll get them typed up and sent direct to you. :-) > Lets just move on and get back to our genealogy...tell us about your brick > walls in Montgomery County, ask questions, submit your surname lists. > There > are lots of us willing and able to help. You are one of a great group of people who've helped me to knock down the unfindables. And thanks to all your hard work I've been able to join First Families of Ohio, Settlers and Builders of Ohio, and Society of Civil War Soldiers of Ohio. I'm currently working on my Barney, Stevens, Rowe family history that I hope to publish this fall, or next spring at the latest. And if you guys ever get a S&B going in Montgomery County I'll be the first to join! :-) Thanks to everyone, and particularly to the certain few (you know who you are) who've helped me over the last several years! BTW, you are correct. The Dayton History Books site is absolutely wonderful, and it's searchable! I have sent some of my stuff to the site several years ago. And Woodland's site is great as well. Keep up the good work! Linda Trent lindatrent@zoomnet.net

    3. The new web site, http://familysearchlabs.org, where we can obtain copies of Ohio death certificates for 1908-1953 still has some glitches. In a couple cases, I have found an individual listed in the Ohio Death Index at http://ohsweb.ohiohistory.org/death, but did not find the death certificate on the Family Search web site. It might be a good idea to check other resources if you don't find what you are looking for at http://familysearchlabs.org. Another backup source would be the Ohio Deaths Database (1908-1932, 1938-1944, 1958-2002) at Ancestry.com, but this requires a fee. However, you can at least see a list of names and death years, even if you do not have a subscription.
