I looked for the other Clutch obits listed in the index at the library, most were only week ending notices, or just a line stating the person died on that date, no "real" obituaries. Closest thing was this... >From Dayton Daily Journal, July 17, 1886, page 3:2 Death from Alcoholism. John Clutch, suffering from alcoholism and confined in the station house for safekeeping since Wednesday night, was found dead in his cell at an early hour yesterday morning. Clutch had been drinking heavily of late, and his system seemed completely broken down from the excessive use of liquor. He was quite delirious and inclined to be violent when first brought to the station house, but after taking some powders which are kept on hand for this class of sufferers who may be confined, remained quiet for the remainder of the night. Thursday morning, Dr. Adams, city physician was called to attend the prisoner. The doctor prescribed the remedies usually given in such cases and again called Thursday night. Clutch in the meantime was placed on a cot, and waited upon by prisoners and turn keys, Clark and McCain, who gave all the attention possible. He could keep nothing on his stomach but whisky and beef tea, and kept growing weaker from exhaustion and delirium. He went to s! leep about 12 o'clock Thursday night, while sitting on his cot. Two hours afterward, when Captain Clark went into the cell to awaken and give his patent medicine, he found him occupying the same position, but dead. The deceased was 35, and unmarried. The body was taken charge of by his mother. There was also an article about Rev. David Clutch.... I'll send it along later. My trip to the library wasn't real helpful I'm afraid... I located the Brien books. I found Peter J. Clutch and Sarah Coddington listed at what's called Sugar Creek Baptist, or "Old Centerville" Cemetery... It looks at a quick glance that they may be listed Sarah online at the "New" Centerville Cemetery, but I'm not sure yet. I found two entries for Sarah... one says she died Dec 5, 1833, the other says "5 Oct/Dec 1833"? Peter Clutch wasn't listed in the first book that I checked, but the second one listed him and Sarah on the same page! I'm looking at a couple maps and trying to decide whether I think the New and Old cemeteries are side by side or in different places... right now I'm uncertain. I guess he still did marriages! The Jonathan Winters connection is interesting! Susannah Coddington died Feb. 9, 1876, and is buried in the Centerville Cemetery, according to the Death Record. It didn't give a Section or Lot number. I found several books on CODDINGTON through Heritage Quest Online, and there was a number of Coddingtons that originated from Woodbridge, N. J., but I found no Peter Coddington connection. The books were a bit vague with the lineages, so he still may have been from that area of N. J. Thanks again for your help, David M. David Winters was a very active minister here in the 1800's, there's a cemetery named after him (part of comedian Jonathan Winter's family, by the way!) You said Susannah Coddington died Feb 9th, did they say what year? The library should have the 1939 Brien cemetery book, I'll look if I get down there at lunch time today, otherwise I'm hoping to get down there for an hour or so on Saturday or Sunday. I'll have to determine which cemetery that is in Centerville, it doesn't appear to be the only one that I've visited in the past. I don't get down that way very often, but I'll try and check out the location and see if I can get access (the one other cemetery down there I visited was only open a couple days a year). I would like to solve the Coddington puzzle, but there are actually a lot more of them than you'd think. They probably can all be traced back to NY or NJ, but it's not always easy connecting them together. Myers "on the 13th January, 1853, by me David Winters." "Winters" was hard to read so I checked the 1860 census which has David Winters occupation as "Y. R. Clergyman", and the 1870 & 1880 census has him as "preacher". She also sent a copy o the "Record of Deaths, Board of Health, City of Dayton, State of Ohio, A. D. 1876" which lists Susannah Coddington (Phebe's mother) as dying on Feb. 9, and buried in Centerville, Ohio. I went online at www.findagrave.com to add Susannah Coddington to the Centerville Cemetery database and found Sarah Coddington, Phebe's sister, buried there, with the note: dau of P. & S. Coddington, age 31y, 4m, 28d, information from Lindsay Brien's 1939 "Cemetery Records of Montgomery County, Ohio". Peter Clutch is also buried there. He died Feb. 11, 1862. So with this information and the probate information you have supplied, I would definitely say that Peter Coddington was the husband of Susannah. Could you check to see if Phoebe Ann (Coddington) Myers is buried there? I don't know her date of death. The last census I found her in was 1870. She was 45yrs old then. I did not find her in any census after that. Do you have access to the Lindsay Brien Book? Are you near the Centerville Cemetery in Mongomery Co.? Thanks again for all your help, David M.
