Could I asked you to get a scan of the death notice for Phoebe the next time your at the library? No hurry. Thanks! I contacted the Montgomery County Records Center and they had her Death Records but couldn't find a Marriage Record of her and Alger. I requested for the years 1870-1880 as she was listed as Myers on the 1870 census and was widowed on the 1900 census as Alger. I'll try again, expanding the request to 1870-1893. Alger was the widow of Dr. Darius Alger according to the Dayton city directories. He appears to have died May 24, 1893 and is listed as Doctor Algers (no first name given) in the death index. He was a veterinary surgeon living at 1217 E. Fifth street when he died, but is listed as "single"? His age was stated as 58 years. Phoebe shows up in Dayton directories listed as his widow starting in 1894. Dr. Alger's practice was located at 1109 E. Fifth street in 1891, an address that I happened to recognize, the current site of the main Dayton post office, location in 1913 of Bodey Hardware (there's a photograph of that address during the flood). It's also just around the corner from work, as are a couple other addresses that he lived or worked at. In 1894, Phoebe was living across the street from where I work.... many of the homes on that street date to the mid 1800's.... I'll have to see if her address still exists. If it's not raining or snowing on Saturday, I may get a chance to run down Fifth street and look for a couple of the locations. >From the 1884-1885 Dayton city directory: ALGER DR. DARIUS, Veterinary Surgeon, has over 25 years Successful Practice; Cures Corns, Contracted Feet and so-called Shoulder Jams, and all Diseases the Horse is heir to, 19 N. St. Clair, Residence, 18 S. Blind (street) The death notice for Phoebe is quite short.... Mrs. Phoebe A. Alger, aged 71, died of asthma this week at her home, 503 Richard street. I didn't have time to look for a notice for Darius as it took me a while to find him in the index. Unlikely that it will mention his wife I think. So I guess we need to determine when we think she may have married Darius, and look for a marriage record? Unless that's where you came across the marriage info, although I guess that would have listed his first name? After her divorce from John J. Myers, she re-married to a man surnamed "ALGER". I don't have his first name, but I found a listing for a death notice in the Dayton Daily Journal for Phoebe A. Alger, on Sept. 12, 1903, v. 41, iss. 41, pg. 8. Also, there is a listing for a Sylvester J. Alger, on March 28, 1881, v. XVIII, iss. 209, pg. 1, col. 6. He may have been her second husband as she was widowed on the 1900 census. I was wondering if you might be able to get a copy of them at the Dayton Library. Thanks for your help, David M. Daniel Hime was born about 1802 in Penn. He was married to Eva Stump(h). I believe they may have first come to Montgomery County before moving to Darke County. They are in the 1860 census in Darke County.Their children are listed as born in Ohio. Their oldest son is not listed on the census but his name is Daniel S. Hime and I have a birthdate for him of May 8 1835, born in PA. Does anybody have information on this family being in Montgomery Co. Thanks. Hi Listers...Looking for the ship that JOHN GOLL came to USA. He MAY have been married in Wurtenburg,GER to NORA BINKLEY, but not sure if he traveled alone. The time frame could be about 1850-1868.Any help is appreciated!! Jim in Darke sjd@erinet.com
I have puzzled out part of my mystery. Two of Peter Eck"s sons married two daughters of Jacob Shover. In the 1860 census for Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Jacob Shover is living with his daughter Susannah and her husband Isaiah Eck's family. His other daughter is Mary Shover married to Isaiah's brother Jacob Eck. According to the census Jacob Shover was born in Penn.about 1783. From rootsweb it looks like Jacob Shover was married to Catharine Overholser also of Penn. and that they also had a son Sebastion Shover. Hopefully, I can build on this new information. So, if anybody was also interested in my query; this is what I have figured out so far. Thankyou. Jeanne Wright Hime --------------------------------- You rock. In 1800, the area of Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory. The official enumeration day of the 1800 census was 4 August 1800. All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. The enumeration was to be completed within nine months. Schedules survive for 13 states. Lost schedules include those for Georgia, Indiana Territory, Kentucky, Mississippi Territory, New Jersey, Northwest Territory, Virginia, Tennessee, and Alexandria County, District of Columbia. Some of the schedules for these states have been re-created using tax lists and other records. By 1810, Ohio was a state. The official enumeration day of the 1810 census was 6 August 1810. All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. The enumeration was to be completed within nine months, but the due date was extended by law to ten months. Schedules exist for 17 states and District of Columbia, Georgia territory, Mississippi territory, Louisiana territory, Orleans, Michigan territory, and Illinois territory. There was, however, a district wide loss for District of Columbia, Georgia, Indiana Territory, Mississippi Territory, Louisiana Territory (MO), New Jersey and Tennessee. Partial losses included Illinois Territory, which had only two counties (Randolph is extant, St. Clair is lost.), and OH, all lost except Washington County. Some of the schedules for these states have been re-created using tax lists and other records. The entire 1820 census of Montgomery County was mistakenly microfilmed by the National Archives with Miami County. For example, when looking at the online census records at Ancestry.com, you will find no separate listing for Montgomery. Everything is recorded under Miami County. Hope this helps. On Saturday, April 12th, the Montgomery County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. Third Street, Dayton. The topic of our meeting will be One Man's Hunt for Civil War Grave Sites presented by Harold George. This program discusses Harold George's 8-year project to identify and locate the original burial sites of those men who served with the 9th Ohio during the Civil War. Mr. George discusses Civil War era experiences, accomplishments, and losses of the 9th Ohio between the years 1861 and 1865, in addition to the techniques used to locate a civil war veteran's grave. Mr. George ties into this discussion the genealogical data discovered as a result of the project. Each person in the audience will receive a handout, "How to Locate a Civil War Veteran's Grave Site". The program is performed in conjunction with Mr. George's book, "Men of the 9th Ohio". Harold George, an author and lecturer, has been a Civil War re-enactor with the 9th Ohio Light Artillery since 1992. He currently serves as commanding officer of the battery, with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Mr. George retired from the Department of Defense in 1994, after 29 years of service. When not writing or performing for the public, Mr. George enjoys photography, travel, fishing and reading. The half-hour "early bird session" at 1:00 will feature Pam Wolosz discussing Free (or Almost) Genealogy Learning - Internet and non-Internet suggestions for learning genealogy. Pam is currently Recording Secretary for the genealogy society and quite an expert on genealogical research. For those who are able to attend, this will be an exciting meeting and we look forward to seeing you.
