Linda, I wonder if your friend remembers the dining room of the Leslie home on Detzen Ave, across from the old Greencastle Cem where there were painted murals of the ancestral homes in Germany. I haven't been to that cemetery in quite awhile but the house was still standing. It probably was the largest house in Edgemont, at least in the 1930's & 1940's. When Bob and my sister were dating Bob drove a red Chrysler convertible. If I remember correctly, the family only owned Chrysler cars. The Walthers all lived a lavish lifestyle, even during the Depression. Jo My friend and I talked about the Walther family this am after I told her about the activity on the list about them and the Leslie's. She used to visit the family and ate meals with them. They were neighbors. She remembers that the parents would go into German whenever they didn't want the kids to know what they were discussing. She thinks that there were Walther's here in the area who were not related to each other. I really don't want to do the research as I have enough going on at the moment with my Downey and Badgley lines, but it would be interesting to know just how many Walther lines there were here. My Uncle Lou Reber, Marie Leslie Reber's father-in-law and her husband Tom, got my husband his first good job, working for Moraine Manufacturing which the Walther's owned. It was machining brake drums and we ruined a bath tub on the shaving from his clothes which clung to him even into the tub! My friends whose relative worked there said she ruined her washer doing his laundry because of the shavings. LindaSS No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. The article that Mr. Webb references about Rev. David Winter can be found on the Montgomery County genealogical society's web site at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohmontgs/ddn_winters.html Carolyn -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_co_oh-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:montgomery_co_oh-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Wayne Webb Sent: Wednesday, April 23, 2008 10:08 AM To: montgomery_co_oh@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MONTGOMERY_CO_OH] Hawker & Fairfield cemeteries Morning Barbara, As Carolyn was kind enough to point out, both churches and the associated cemeteries are not located in Montgomery county. Both congregations were, and please do not quote me too stringently on this, founded by that paragon of the Reformed religion in southwestern Ohio, David Winters. One of these days I will stumble onto the journals he supposedly kept. Many years ago I made a trip to David's Church there in Kettering for research reasons. In talking to the kind people there we got onto other congregations founded by David Winters. Amongst those not in Dayton itself was the Zion church down in Moraine on Dixie Highway and both Hawker's and Fairfield in Greene county. I seem to recall there were several others as well. Waynesboro seems to pop into my mind for some reason. Sometime ago I sent a large PDF to one of the Montgomery county web sites. It was the full newspaper clipping of the life and times of Rev. David Winters. I found it down at David's church and scanned it in pieces. It was amateurish and done many years ago but it was better than nothing. There was a lot of good information in it about the early church in Montgomery county and some of the surrounding counties. Problem is that I cannot now remember which Montgomery county site I sent it to. Perhaps Carolyn, or some other kind soul, can recall where I sent it to and help a failing memory. For Wayne Webb; I can recommend some reference material for you about the history of Hawker Church and some other churches related to Rev. David Winters. That is; FAITH OF OUR FATHER, The Story of the Hawker Church, Miriam Engle Allen, Fairway Press, Lima, Ohio, 1994. ISBN 1-55673-951-6. This 280 page, softbound, book is available from the Hawker United Church of Christ, 1617 N. Longview St, Beavercreek, Ohio, 45432. The church phone number is 937-426-0974. The church has an online presence at http://www.hawkerucc.org/index.html Miriam is a retired English teacher and was the historian of Hawker Church for many years. She also is my Engle cousin. On p 47 Miriam writes about the Mt. Zion Charge, a group of four churches all shepherded by David Winters. These were Davids, Hawker, Zion and Mt. Zion. I believe I have read elsewhere maybe in Beers HISTORY OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY that David Winters served other churches as well, perhaps as founding pastor. I just looked in Edgars PIONEER LIFE and found a remark that David Winters had been associated with 13 different churches ( but Edgar did not name them ). In any case, it is clear that the Winters family of German Reformed ministers; father Thomas (1778-1863) and sons Thomas H. and David, were major contributors to religious life in the Miami Valley in the 19th century. Miriam Allen offers a brief glimpse of this family in her history of Hawker Church. DICK FOLKERTH Dallas
There is no Hawker or Fairfield cemetery in Montgomery County. Regarding Hawker's Church Cemetery (From Greene County, Beavercreek Township history, page 581): In 1851, the German Reformed Church, known as "Hawker's Church," was built; it is situated on the Dayton and Xenia pike, about five miles northwest from Alpha, and about three-fourths of a mile from the Montgomery County line, on the farm of Adam Hawker, S. E. Sec. 9, (2. 7.) Regarding Fairfield Cemetery: Fairfield Cemetery is located in Bath Township, on Rt. 444 and Clover Street near Wright Patterson AFB, Fairborn, OH. Evening Lists, Since several people seemed intrigued by the idea of volunteering to aid in the creation of keywords for the Some Who Led web site I thought a word to the wise in how it should work. Those interested in participating would send an email to me denoting their willingness to participate. After I have some five or six willing I will assign them a range of pages to work on. Each person would enter the proper information into the box to the bottom right corner. They can do four ro five pages, or whatever feels comfortable to them per session, and send the email. I will then on a periodical basis update the web site to reflect those changes. The follow lines is an example of how the email is when I receive it; minus the opening and closing quotes. "001.jpg ~~ ____________________________________________ 008.jpg ~~ ____________________________________________ 073.jpg ~~ Comments: Jacob Wine, George Wine, George Wein, Philadelphia, Pa., York County, Pa. Little Canowago congregation, Michael Wine, Susanna Miller, Frederick, Md., Shenandoah County, Va., Forestville, Va., John Wine, Elizabeth Garber, Elder Martin Garber, Flat Rock, Va., Jacob Wine, John Garber, Catherine Neff, John Neff, Daniel P. Wine, Page County, Va., ~~ ____________________________________________ 074.jpg ~~ Comments: Jacob Price, New Market, Va., West Virginia, Ohio, Prince of Peace, Civil War, Brother John Kline, Hardy Co.,W.Va., Pendleton Co., W.Va, Flat Rock church, ~~ ____________________________________________ 075.jpg ~~ " What information do we need to enter keyword about? Since Robin was kind enough to show what it would look like a few rules on what is needed. Obviously we want every person mentioned with the women denoted by both their maiden and married names. Robin correctly entered Susanna Miller. Susanna Miller would also entered as Susanna Wine. Yes, it may seem odd but in the long run it works because someone may only known of "Mrs. Susanna Wine" and not know her maiden name or the name of her husband. Galen B. Royer aand Daniel Long Miller, more commonly known as D. L. Miller, would be entered two or three different ways. As you can see on the metadata I already have entered they each appear several different times under variants. Again this is trying to be as helpful as possible. Now as to places. This presents a small problem. Yes, we would like to know all the instances of a county or city. I believe that in the entirety of the project this would be cumbersome. What I have done in the material I have completed is to create keywords for the churches and congregations and any other church body. Even if the church mentioned was not a German Baptist church I recorded it. I also created index entries for institutions (Virginia Normal College, Huntingdon Normal School, etc. etc.) and any companies mentioned. I have also entered any references to periodicals Brethren related such as the Primitive Christian, Brethren Family Almanac, etc., etc. I am not saying that the way I view this is either right or wrong. Once I get the five or six volunteers I would like we will mutually settle on a schema to follow. Perhaps it may include counties and cities. Thank you to the two people who did seem to be interested in participating. Wayne Webb
Afternoon List, As part of my ongoing archival project of German Baptist church related material I have posted online a sample of one of the books in my collection. I offer it for your reading pleasure. There are no strings attached but I do offer these words of advice. You may have trouble printing it depending on your computer. I can not control this and offer no solutions to this problem. You will not be able to "right-click" the image and save it to your computer. There may be some other problems that I am not aware of - no warranty comes with the material. For those of you with dial-up modems you will likely have problems with the images in the film strip at the bottom of the page. I know I did when the site was created. Your web browser will likely time out and not paint all the images. In their stead will be just a place-holder. Clicking on the image still serves the same function - it takes you to that page. Those with a faster connection to the Internet should have no problems. How it would appear on a Web TV I do not know. Web site creation for that crowd offers difficulties. The book contains the biographies of a sampling of prominent, and some not so well-known, ministers and elders of the German Baptist church of the 19th and early 20th Century. The graphics were scanned individually and then the book in its entirety was typeset. It represents a lot ofd work on the part of myself so I do hope that you enjoy it. I am looking for a select few individuals willing to help me create keywords, such as shown on the pages. What is needed is the keywords from the individual pages to be typed into the block to the bottom right and then emailed to me. Let us see how many are willing to aid in this and how many just want the book with no effort on their part. Takers and no givers! This web site is a test bed to see how the technology works and how to set up an aesthetically appealing site. It, with several other works, will hopefully be the start of something that will attract attention so that others of it's kind can be worked on. I am looking for critiques on the page. Please do not send an email asking for a serarch engine. Yes, there is no search engine as you may have noticed. You need keywords to create a search engine plus the program that can eventually be obtained to create the search engine. As stated, a few readers can facilitate this by taking the time to email them. One person to take a range of pages and one or several others to take another range of pages and soon it would be done. Then a search engine program can be purchased to create one. The one thing needed is a Javascript routine to include a "next" & "previous" page button on each page. I do not know how to create such a script as I am not a programmer. To create each page and then include on it these buttons is very time consuming thus requiring a script to accomplish it. You try coding this many pages, and more, and soon you will see what I mean. If you go to the "Contents" page (pages 7 and 8) you will see an alphabetical listing of the biographies. They are all capable of being clicked with your mouse which will take you to that page. Furthermore, if you scroll using the film strip at the bottom to page 225 there is an index. You can clck on the number and it will take you to that page. My thanks to Mr. Dennis Roth for hosting this site for me. His willingness to step up to the plate is most welcome and admired. Please, no emails asking something that was already covered in this email. Read the email if you have any questions. And lastly. You may pass this email along to any mailing lists you would like to. However, please include the entirety of the email and not just the web site link. http://www.brethrennetwork.com/orwahist/books/001_some_who_led/ Wayne Webb Editor: Brethren Roots P.S. I sure do write a disjointed email huh! Sure wish I had finished school. <grin>
