John Henry and Elizabeth (Gebhart) Pressler of Montgomery County, Ohio were my great great grandparents. In 2003, I contacted a woman in Indiana who knew Mary Presslor Swope Carmichael. She contacted Mary's nephew's wife, Marka (Mrs. David Presslor) in Rockville, Indiana. She said that there were just a few notes of this and that, but that was all. Mary died in a nursing home in 2000. I am interested in what information you received that belonged to your grandmother, Laverne Presslor Cunningham. Mary had written to my parents in Ohio in the years before she died, still working on her research. I was very disappointed that she never published her book. I would really be interested in talking to you. My email address is: rockingranny@cox.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ladyshoffner1 Surnames: Trick, Madlinger Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.montgomery/4599.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to find out what the Name of the Nursery was that the Madlingers owned in Dayton. I know that Catherine Madlinger married Henry Koehler 05 May 1885 Montgomery County, Dayton, Ohio and Victoria Madlinger lived with them. So according to Victorias orbit. she still helped on the Nursery and farm up to the summer before she died. as far as the Koehler Family goes I have Henry and Catherines childern. I would like to have the rest of Henrys family if you have it. I am including Victoria Obit so it might help someone help me find what Nursery they are refering to . The following is a Translation from the Dayton German newspaper. Printed first on Feb 13, 1901 in the "Daytoner Volks-Zeitung" newspaper. Reprinted on March 9, 1901 with a Photograph,in the "GedenkBatter" a magaqine suplement to the "Daytoner Volks-Zeitung". Victoria Madlinger, 11 Feb 1901 Mrs. Victoria Madlinger, one of the first (female) German-American settler in theis area, died yesterday befroe noon after being bed-ridden for only 10 days. She was born on the 16th of june 1819, in Dasbachried near the city of Achern, in the Duthcy of Baden, Germany, attaining the age of 82. She is the widow of Anton Madlinger. As early as the middle 40's her family immigrated to the USA and settled in Dayton, Ohio, along the Old Troy Pike, the same place where Mrs. Madlinger died; however, at that time it was still a wilderness and only through the untiring hard work of the settler, the Miami Valley as it is known today, became recognized as the Garden Spot of Ohio. Eventually, at this place, a nursery was established mainly through the efforts of Mrs. Madlinger because her husband died 42 years prior to this time. As the children Grew up she gave the business to her children, consequently, her burden became lighter, even so, her hands were seldon idle. As she was growing up she became accustomed to hard work, and even last summer she was working the field more for fondness of her work rather than having to do it for existence. Ten days before she died she experienced an inflammation of the lunges and due to her advanced age hope for her recovery proved to be fatal. An adult daughter, Mrs. Daniel Glaser, preceded her mother in death, where as a son and six daughters survived her: Anton Madlinger Maria Wald Magdelena Wahrer Josephine Nock Sophia Hambrecht Louise Trick Catherine Koehler Mrs. Madlinger is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a sister Magdalene Schnetz and wide circle of acquaintances and friends. Mrs. Madlinger belonged to the Alter Society of Holy Rosary Church. Thanks Laura Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: wd8dcx2005 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.montgomery/4599.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I poked around a bit at the Dayton library, didn't find much.... saw a mention that Victoria's son (Anton, I think?) had a "truck" farm on the Troy pike three miles from the courthouse. There's a Koehler connection here, right? A number of the Koehler's are listed as gardeners and are living on Troy Pike.... the listings in the rear or the city directories didn't list any nurseries on Troy pike, but I think the problem here is that it wasn't considered part of Dayton? There was nothing listed in the regular part of the directories under Koehler or Madlinger, except individuals, no business with those names, and no mention of the employers of anyone who was listed as a gardener that I could find.... it occurred to me on the way home, that depending on how far back the telephone books go, they might have some coverage outside the immediate city of Dayton area? i'm struggling a bit with the time frame though... i found bits and pieces from 1880 clear thru 1911 i think.... steve koons, dayton, ohio ps... i think we've emailed before about a Shoffner/Partington connection i have in Shelby Co, Ohio? 1. [MONTGOMERY_CO_OH] Martin Hoover (1750-1816)
    2. Wayne Webb
    3. Morning List, I thought I would pass along a bit of wisdom for anyone who descends from Martin Hoover (1750-1816). This would be the Martin Hoover who traces his roots back through Bedford county, Pennsylvania (Morrison's Cove) to Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Martin Hoover died in Jefferson township, Montgomery county, Ohio and was the father of some eighteen children. I will not go into whether any of his children preceded him in death; that is all available on the Internet. Some of the people out there are arbitrarily assigning a middle name of Good for he and his brothers. Understanding that this is possible there is also not a shred of evidence to support this thought. However there is evidence that Martin Hoover himself did have a middle name. Last October I took the time to scan the contents of Martin's estate records while on vacation in the Dayton, Ohio area. I am now almost complete with the process. On one receipt, dated June 11, 1824, a Daniel Miller acknowledged his receipt of money from the estate executor, Aaron Miller. This receipt is witnessed by a Benjamin Miller. I leave it up to researchers to figure who the Millers were. My bit of wisdom is what Daniel Miller had to say. He stated, and it is clearly written on the receipt, "of the estate of Martin P Hoover Decd". So there is evidence that Martin Hoover did have a middle name. Wayne Webb
