    3. Hi Guys, My great grandmother in one of her letters wrote: "Nina has kept house before for the children she can buy at Titlows and Welyles what they need." Does anyone have access to the directories that might be able to look up these two businesses and see if they're spelled correctly, and what kind of business they were, and where they were located? I tried using the 1888-92 directories on Ancestry.com, but got no hits for either business. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Linda lindatrent@zoomnet.net

    1. [MONTGOMERY_CO_OH] Joseph EVANS or Lemuel EVANS in Dayton abt 1890 -1900
    2. Ed Evans
    3. Hello, I have been 'listening' here for about a month now. My grandfather (Robert) Lemuel Evans (b1869) moved from Shenandoah County, Virginia to Dayton when he was a young boy - sometime after 1880. It is believed he had a brother living in Dayton. I have found Lemuel Evans and his wife Christina O (Jenkins) (b1876) in the 1900 census living in the 6th ward; house number 242 on Homested Street. Lemuel worked for Dayton Last Works and moved within a couple years to Michigan where the Dayton Last Works was building a new plant. On nearby Mound Street are a Joseph (b1851) and Isabel Evans (b1855) with children Charles E (1883), William H (1880), Annie S (1890), Harry D (1892), and Lemuel N (1899). The state of birth for both Joseph and Isabel is Virginia. Lemuel had an older brother named Joseph William (or William Joseph) (c1953) so I suspect this may be the brother Lemuel Evans went to live with. Does anyone here connect to (or have any information regarding) Joseph and Isabel Evans? -ed

    1. Re: [MONTGOMERY_CO_OH] city directory listings
    2. I suggest you look in Dayton City Directories before 1888 for Joseph. Joseph also might be in the 1880 census. Look in city directories in the early 1880s and 1870s and the censuses for Joseph Tahl. Check the censuses for what town or city he was in before 1888. Joseph might be in the deed records for the buying of the house. Allan Campbell **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. 1. [MONTGOMERY_CO_OH] Curtner_Cortner_Cotner
    2. Hello List, I'm researching my Cortner/Curtner line, which migrated form Guliford County, North Carolina to Montgomery, Ohio and spread to Darke, Miami, Shelby in Ohio. The line also goes to Indiana and out. The Curtner name arrived as CORTNER and was later shifted to Curtner with some lines going back to Cortner. The Cotner line in Allen County, Ohio and Indian are part of the family too. George Gortner (father of Daniel Curtner, b.1738 and d. 1819) of the Pa, VA, NC lines was a patriot and declared he was changing his name to "Cortner" to sound more American. George is the father to Daniel b 1763 and George Jr. b.1771. George was also a North Carolina Regulator with his brother Peter Cortner/Curtner and fought at the Battle of Almance. Daniel Curtner b. 1763 (GGGG Grandfather) husband of Catherine Coble b. 1758 (GGGG Grandmother) migrated around 1803 with the Waymire and Coble families from NC. At one time the Curtner's had deed to Section 14 in Butler Township and later sold it to the Patty line. To think it could have been called Curtner Falls instead of Patty Falls in Englewood Reserve. Also John Curtner husband to Elizabeth Waymire, son of Daniel and Catherine had 160 Acres at Main and Heathcliff back to the Stillwater River in Randolph Township which now has the Hospital Samaritan North there. Solomon had another 100 Acres next to him which later became part of the Michael Crow line (Sarah Curtner daughter of John and Elizabeth Waymire married Michael Crow). The burial place for Daniel Curtner and Catherine Coble are not proven since there is no physical evidence like a gravestone or records. However, they were part of the founding members of the Stillwater Lutheran Church in section 13 of Butler Township, Montgomery which had it's own graveyard. The Cemetery had few stones left and was abandoned for a long time and to me is the logical location of their burial. The Church started out as wood and later became a brick church which was later torn down. The bricks were then taken to the build the new Church at the Corner of Dog Leg Road. The church there is St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and the front is were you can see the bricks. I am researching all connections to my line. A few of them are Waymire, Coble, Hoover, Bartmess, McCarter, Weaver, Stutzman, Moist, Staley, Shafor, Shaw,Mullenix, Angel , Beam, Fetzer, Ford, Hartle, Lambert, (in Greene County: Nye Coates, Albright, Sweeney, Teach, Gardner, Harris, Spencer). Daniel and Catherine's Children Peter Curtner married Sophia Staley and sister Mary Curtner married Levi Staley and all later moved to Shelby County, Ohio To Darke County, Ohio went John Curtner Jr. around 1855, his daughter Nancy Jane married William J. Lambert and they lived with him for a time. His son Andrew Waymire married Mary Ellen Robbins and they too went to Darke County. To Darke is Daniel Waymire Curtner b.1814 son of John Curtner, St. Daniel married Matilda Angel. In Darke we also have George Cortner_Curtner Jr. (he appears in the 1812 census there)who I believe to be Daniel b 1763 brother. George married Margaret Strickler and Mary A. Miller. He had three daughters: Barbara (married to Adam Beam), Elizabeth (married Jacob Hartle) and Katherine/Catherine (married Isaac Lemmon/Lemon). Daniel's son William went to Darke with his wife Mary Mullenix, Abraham Eli Curtner and Nancy/Nackey Mullenix went, Solomon Curtner married Elizabeth Mullenix. As you can see quite a few went to Darke County and from there over to Indiana. Miami County, Ohio has connection with the lines mentioned since some of the families resided there first. Curtner,McCarter, Bartmess and Stutzman/Stutsman, etc. A few of my stumbling blocks are the Bartmess and McCarter line. John Curtner Jr. married Harriet Bartmess daughter to Phillip Bartmess b. 3 Sep 1778, d. 15 Oct 1853. Some reference has been made that Harriet's Mother "Jane" is a Stutzman, Jane is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Englewood, Ohio which was named Harrisburg before. Brother Eli b. 1822, d.1876 married Barbara Ann McCarter b.1823, died in Alameda California 1897. I'm looking for solid evidence for the parents of Barbara. Please excuse the rambling, I tend to go jump around with all of the names in my head... I hope to hear from you, Tom Curtner **************Gas prices getting you down? 3. I am not a relative or researcher of this family. A quick look at Ohio Deaths at: <www.labs.familysearch.org/t.net> lists several Tahl's with a connection to Joseph. Arys Tahl with parents names as Joseph and Esther Toba. born in Russia and buried at House of Jacob Cem(Jewish) Aaron Naflula Tahl with parents Joseph and Esther Stern. born in Russia and buried House of Jacob (located on Old Troy Pike, St Rt 202, Dayton) There are also children listed with Joseph and Sadie as parents(2 Josephs? or a second wife?) There are more listings and with age and birthdates etc..on most. This is a wonderful test site. To use click on Record Search, Enter names, select the record you want on the pull down, (I skip the date field) Type in the State (just the first few letters) then select from pull down. From Close or exact, pull down to click on partial. Scroll down list of results...and there they are.
