    3. Actually I think the oldest Dayton cemetery WAS at 2nd and Main. Maybe it was 1st and Main. It's been a while since I read that. Needless to say, it is gone. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_co_oh-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:montgomery_co_oh-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jo Sent: Friday, October 10, 2008 12:36 AM To: OH-MV-MEMORIES@rootsweb.com; Montgomery Co, OH Subject: Re: [MONTGOMERY_CO_OH] Old Greencastle Cem While searching on Find A Grave I found an article about the Old Greencastle Cemetery in Harrison Twp and found the following information very troubling: "The unwillingness of the city of Dayton to intercede in its maintenance of Old Greencastle Cemetery insures that conditions will only worsen at what is a sacred and historical site and which deserves to be protected." Were any of you aware that this cemetery, probably Dayton's oldest cemetery, is not being cared for? What a disgrace for the civic leaders that the cemetery hasn't been named an historic site and then the city government would be obligated to care for it and preserve it. Jo Kester (The full text) Old Greencastle Cemetery Dayton Montgomery County Ohio USA Old Greencastle Cemetery is thought to be Dayton's oldest, with interments dating back to 1839. (Its name comes from the "Greencastle circuit," the circuit of the United Brethren church to which the church located on the east side of the cemetery originally belonged.) The cemetery lies at the corner of South Broadway and Miami Chapel Road, near the former United Brethren-Miami Chapel Church, in the Edgemont neighborhood of Dayton. This cemetery is no longer active and is not to be confused with "New" Greencastle Cemetery on Nicholas Road. This second, currently active cemetery was established in 1942 as available burial space at the original cemetery site dwindled. Old Greencastle has suffered greatly over the decades as a result of the decline of the surrounding neighborhood. Things worsened during the mid-1990's as the cemetery's perpetual care fund ran out; lack of money for upkeep of the cemetery has led to a general condition of disrepair. The unwillingness of the city of Dayton to intercede in its maintenance insures that conditions will only worsen at what is a sacred and historical site and which deserves to be protected. 2. In 1900 Louisa/Liza Taylor lived in Dayton, Ohio with her daughter Margaret Wyman.? She had 10 children 2 living. I know of the 2 living and no clue about the other 8. She died between 1900 and 1910. I am trying to find her death date and place of burial. She was married twice - first to a Newton [or that was her maiden name], and then to a William K. Taylor, peddler, who died before 1900.? I can't find his death date/place either. Louisa was born Feb 1834 in Tennessee Any help finding her death date would be so very appreciated. Barb

    3. Well I found where he was buried. On the death certificate (which is very hard to read the cemetery name) was the initials of V or U then S. and a scribble. I thought well, maybe he was buried at the Veteran (National) Cemetery on West Third St. In Dayton, I searched their database and found it!! Boyd, John J, d. 04/16/1943, Plot: S 2 18, bur. 05/11/1943 One thing I noticed was that he was buried almost one month after he died. Now I know he was also in the service. 3. Kay,   A time frame would help someone who is attempting to answer your query.  Yes, Montgomery county kept lots of marriage records.  Most of the originals are stored downtown in the archives, but alot of people on this list have books that were published or might have your ancestors in their files and may be able to provide you with the assistance you are seeking.    Including a time frame with your note would certainly help, as would other details such as township the couple lived in as well as a summary of children etc.   Just some friendly suggestions. Do we send our request via e-mail at the library websit or send it to a specific person? My great great grandfather, James Bracy Oliver, moved alone to Dayton about 1809 when he was in his late 20's..? One county history says he came from Augusta County Va.? Other sources say he came from PA.? I have researched his children through the census thinking they would write where he was form.?? They listed different things, VA, PA and even Kentucky.? This has been my brick wall for years.? He lived from 1781to 1846 and married Mary Hardman in 1810 and had 11 children.? When I checked the obituary page, it is for one of his daughters, Rita who married Gorton Arnold.?? I am hoping it might make mention of her father.? There was quite a bit written about him in Pioneer Life in Dayton which is one that says he came from Augusta County VA.??? I am not sure how I can confirm this without know his parents names but I have never been able to find a record of his there. I did go to the Dayton library several years ago as I found his grandson, James Oliver Arnold, left papers to the library which proved to be a great help.? No clue was to where he was from but there was a bit written about that his father and grandfather traveled to Illinois to visit James Bracy Olivers brother.? Then another entry about P.M. Oliver in Shelbyville County which I figured to be Pleasant M. Oliver.? I was able to correspond with descendants of Pleasant but they had not been able to find out anything either.? Thanks so much.
