I have much to send you on William Matthew Massengale, but having just tried and lost it all, I'll have to start over again. Briefly, you may prove me wrong, but I'm 99.9% certain that our William Matthew Massengale was the oldest son of Matthew III and I think I can present a convincing case. It is well established in our line that William Massengale and his son Harrison traveled to Missouri for an extended length of time. While they were there, they saw a cousin whom we believe was "Missouri" John Massengale in Kansas City. A photograph in our possession commemorates the event. Additionally, William and Harrison are missing from the Wayne and Clinton County 1880 census records. I do believe that the William Massengale whom Henry and Delilah Goodman identify as living in Dawson was, indeed, our William Matthew Massengale. If they were unaware that Billy had a different mother, it was because it was a well-kept family secret. What we know about him comes from years o! f digging. Until this year, we did not even know that he had been married before he came to Wayne County. Enough for now. I will put everything together (off line this time, so I don't lose it) and will try to post it again this evening.

In the probate records for Mathew Jr. it said that Patsey Thompson was Mathew Jr. first wife and William is the 3th child on their list. It says that William was also living in Dawson, Missouri. If the Probate Records are true this was his family ( He married into our Randall family ). 6. I don't know how many I posted but there were 12 pages of attachments with Probate information, some census and marriages. If Mathew Massengale Jr. was married before marring Patsey Thompson I don't know why it wasn't in the probate records. ? Our William name was William Riley Massengale not William Mathew Massengale. Mathew Sr. was in Jefferson County, Iowa before 1840. Mathew Sr., Henry, and John are head of households. It is in 1 of the attachments I posted.

I tried looking through the online census through Mid-Continent Library and figured they were not in Rockport in 1880. How did you find them in Nodaway County? Do you know the town they lived nearby? Or the township? This is pushing it, but would you have any info on where they were in 1890? I guess Missouri doesn't have any census info for that year.

You don't know what a MONUMENTAL service you have done for the descendants of the man we in Tennessee and Kentucky know as Matthew Massengale JR (you know as SR) and his son Matthew "Stump" Massengale (III - whom you know as JR). My husband is a direct descendant of Matthew SR > Matthew JR > Matthew "Stump" > William Matthew. You have quite literally provided the missing pieces of our puzzle, and there will be quite a lot to talk about in the weeks to come. I stayed up until 3 a.m. last night transcribing the probate records, which were sent to me courtesy of a mutual internet acquaintance. I do not have your branch of the family, and you do not have mine, but I think we're about to rectify that. I want to invite you and other descendants of Matthew Massengale of Decatur, Iowa, to take a look at my database on Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project: The Clarks of Otter Creek and Related Families. I have already incorporated the children of Matthew Massengale! JR (He is actually the 2nd of three generations of Matthew Massengales) and the children of Matthew "Stump" Massengale. It will give you a little more perspective on the larger family and ultimately should help you in your own research, as well. My db is at <http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gmcflc&id=I06735>

I had not been able to find William and Mary except for the 1856 census and the 1900 census. Now I'll have to take some time to browse over the 1880 census to see if they were in Rockport then also. Interestingly enough, my Dad, Ray Yandell, ended up living in Rockport after he retired. I wonder if he knew his grandparents also lived there?

Yes we knew that William was married to Mary Jane Rowe we have the 1856 census we thought they put her name as Massengale because she was under her grandfather. Did you find the 1870 census for William and Mary Jane Randall? If you haven't you can find it in the Templeton Twp. Atchison County, Missouri Series M593 Roll 756 Page 471. They are listed Wm. Randle, Mary J., James H., Jacob, Silas. William's brothers Daniel, Milton, and Milford were all in Brownville, Nebraska ( Nemaha County) Series M 593 Roll 831 Pages 281 and 282 this was from Heritage Quest Online. Louisa wasn't living with any of her sons, Abigail or Amanda she could have been with Phebe we can't find Phebe and her husband Washington Massengale. But on the census after Daniel Randle family their is another family we are wondering if the Lavica is Louisa. If so she would have remarried after her husband John died. We don't know if it is her but we wonder. The last thing we know about Washington and Phebe is that they bought land in Scott City, Missouri ( Atchison County ) right across the bridge from Brownville, Nebraska. They boght the land Sept.1, 1865 and filed it Sept 16,1865 but they didn't finish paying for it. Sometime between then June 29, 1868 it looks like they left. We don't know where they went. But the land was sold and the money was paid to Pharis Millsap it was sold by the Sheriff. The sale was posted in the Acthison County Journal paper for 3 weeks before it was sold. What I don't understand is that Phebe's brother Milford got married Jan. 24, 1869 in North Star which is the same place as Scott City. So if the families were that close why didn't Washington and Phebe come back before the sale. Did they go to California too? Or did they just not care? In the probate records of Mathew Massengale Sr. it said that Washington died in 1871 or 1872.

I saw your post about the Massengale records. My gr grandfather, William Batchley Randall, was brother to Phebe and Abigail. As you probably know, he married Mary Jane Rowe, who lived in the home of Matthew Massengale. Here is the information I have about that... Mary Jane (Rowe) is listed on the 1856 Richland Township, Decator Co IA as Mary J Massengale, 16 years old, born in TN an living in the household of 73-year old widowed Matthew Massengale from NC who moved to IA about 1837. A 34-year old Martha Row and several other children with last name of Row were also in the household. Matthew was Martha’s father. The Massengale family lived next to the John Randall, Sr family in Decatur Co. Other researchers have listed Mary Jane as a “Rowe”. She apparently was daughter of Martha Row and her husband believed to be Peter Row. Later marriage and bible records show her name to be Mary J. Rowe. (Source: Tom Arnold) I've been trying to find more information about William B. Randall and his parents, along with Mary Jane Rowe and her parents, so this information really helps. Anything else you have would be appreciated. Do you go to the Randall Reunion in Maryville each summer? I missed the one this summer.
