I suggest you have a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/familyhistory/ and the advice given in 'the basics' and then from there the piece 'To Pay or Not To Pay? A guide to choosing genealogy sites on the internet -' at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/familyhistory/get_started/paying_for_research_01.shtml The advice there about getting a free trial if you can before committing yourself may well be sensible. If you do so, make sure that you know how to cancel it if need be, and choose your free trial at a time when you have free time available to make the most of it, and all your outstanding queries lined up so that you can get as much done as possible in the time. If you are in UK you may well find that local libraries or archives will allow you to use one or both of the major commercial providers, as they may well have institutional subscriptions. Some people prefer different sorts of search engine. Familysearch now has quite a good name index to 1841 to 1911 censuses but then you have to link to Findmypast to access the images.
