    1. [MON] Parishes in Monmouthshire wrongly labelled in Familysearch and FindmyPast

    3. One of my family history contacts has permitted me to forward to several mailing lists the result of a recent complaint made to Familysearch. See the details below. It occurs to me that we may be able to 'crowdsource' corrections if members of the relevant lists deliberately look for entries near the start and finish of the registers affected and collated details are sent to FamilySearch and FindmyPast. If someone has database experience and would like to co-ordinate such a response, or if someone has access to the original registers or a quality index to them (such as produced by Gwent FHS, Glamorgan FHS, FreeReg or the Mongenes database) of one or more of the parishes and would like to identify Familysearch citations for entries on the first and last pages of the relevant registers, please contact me off-list for a reference that can be used. I am copying this to the Rootsweb Glamorgan list as well as the Rootsweb Monmouthshire and the Yahoo Mongenes list as Glamorgan FHS have indexed at least one of the parishes involved. Also I rather hope we can do something similar with some West Glamorgan parishes that have been wrongly labelled on FamilySearch and FindmyPast. Jeff Quote - reply from Familysearch to some specific queries- Thank you for contacting Familysearch with the details of the problems with the records from Monmouthshire, Wales We were able to look through the films and the following is a summary of the errors we have found. 1. Film 2419405, DGS 4393257. The film has records from Rockfield, Rumney, St Brides Wentlloog, St. Maughans and St Mellons in Monmouthsire. The indexes found in the collection Wales, Monmouthshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1912 show the location as Rockfield except indexes taken from Images 755-790 - Burials 1813-1904. These are are correctly shown as St Mellons. 2. Film 2415010, DGS 4393200. The film has records for LLangatock-Iuxta-Caerleon, Rumney, Llanover, Tregare in Monmouthshire, but all indexes show the location as LLangatock Juxta Caerleon. These indexes are also found at Wales, Monmouthshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1912. The following is a link to those records for your convenience: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2075051 The records from Find My Past have the same mis-information. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to determine which is the correct indexed location without looking at the film. The film can be ordered on loan to a FamilySearch center near you. Just click on the film number in the catalog and you will be directed to a film ordering page. The records can also be viewed on Find My Past at a local FamilySearch Center We have notified our technical staff of the errors and hopefully they will be able to make the corrections in the not-too-distant future. However, due to large demands on limited resources, this may take some time. We are also adding a note in the Wiki Known Issues document to alert other researchers of the problem. If you are unfamiliar with the Wiki page, it is found by following the "Learn More" link on the Collection main page. We encourage researchers to always follow the Learn More link in each collection of records to read details particular to that set of records, any Known Issues, related websites for searching and instructions on how to cite the records for your sources. We wish you success in your family research. Don't hesitate to contact us again if we can be of further assistance of if we have not correctly diagnosed the problem.
