    3. Hi Marilyn I suspect the pronunciation is the same whichever Henllan you are talking about, because there are Henllans in many other Welsh counties, including Powys, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Monmouthshire, as well as Denbighshire. The easiest way to pronounce the dreaded LL is to replace the first L with the letter H - just say HENHLAN and it will sound (almost) right Robert -----Original Message----- From: monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marilyn & Michael Could someone please advise what the pronunciation of the place Henllan in Denbyshire might be.

    3. Many people find the Welsh 'll' hard to pronounce. Most foreigners would think hen-clan would not be far from what you hear, but the tongue needs to be further up behind from teeth for 'll' than 'cl'. Sounds of Wales is John Ball's page with pronunciations of many Welsh place names. How about going to http://www.jlb2011.co.uk/wales/sounds/index.htm and getting the idea of a two-syllable word ending in Llan from 'Cellan' and the combination of Hen and a syllable starting with 'll' by listening to Castell Henllys.
