    1. [MON] Murder Mystery in Blaenavon! William Edwards and Lewis Roberts Help please
    2. Dawn Robson
    3. Hello everyone! I have an ancestor called William Edwards (aka Will o' the Coed) and these are the details that I have about him. I would love to find out some more and would be grateful for ideas. The notes below were given to me by a relative but I don't know who discovered these facts. 1812 Lewis Roberts, Wm Richards, Ann Jones and Wm Williams were witnesses giving evidence against William Edwards 'Where as William Edwards was guilty of feloniously and maliciously shooting Lewis Roberts'. He was sentenced to be transported for life to the coast of New South Wales (The Criminal Register Indexes show that he was actually sentenced to be hanged for shooting Lewis with intent.) Hereford Journal 8 April 1812 (Reporting on the Oxford circuit Monmouthshire Assizes the previous week) W Edwards was charged with wilfully having shot at Lewis Roberts so as to maim and disfigure him. Found guilty and sentenced to death - Reprieved. Wm Edwards appears to have been kept on board the hulk Retribution anchored off the coast of Portsmouth until he was transported. He embarked on the ship Surrey which arrived in Sydney on 28th July 1814 but he was dead before he got there and buried at sea. Saturday 10 Sept 1814 The contagious and malignant disease which prevailed aboard the male convict ship Surrey on her late passage hither from England having been fatal to thirty six of the convicts destined for this place, his Excellency the Governor deems it expedient that the names of the unfortunate sufferers shall be publicised in order that their friends shall be officially appraised of their decease. Wm Edwards died on 7th july 1814 and was the eleventh man to die. I would love to know if Lewis Roberts(aka Lewis Lewis/ Lewis Robert Lewis and Lewis Roberts) survived and if there was a more detailed report of the incident in another paper (which one in 1812?), giving the reason for their quarrel perhaps. I wonder why William wasn't hanged, I expect he wished he had been after living in the terrible prison hulk and then that disease ridden ship. I know I shouldn't feel sorry for him but I do a bit. I don't know if he had a wife, he was a farmer and aged about 47. If anyone has any ideas for finding further info I would be very grateful, esp anything online as I don't live in Wales.
