The thought that immediately springs to mind given that William EDWARDS was a farmer is that Lewis ROBERTS was either poaching on his land, indulging in a bit of sheep stealing or something similar; or that William suspected Lewis was doing so. I imagine that Lewis did survive since he apparently was a witness against William. There's no mention in any of the notes that you have that Lewis was killed only that he "[shot] Lewis with intent" and did so "so as to maim and disfigure him".
