If you go to www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian you will find a searchable index of the 'Cambrian' newspaper which was published from 1804. There is an account of the trial at Monmouth Assizes in the edition of 11 April 1812. Searching on 'Lewis Roberts' also turns up an item about a man of that name from 'Blanavan' which could be Blaenavon, a timber merchant, something to do with bankruptcy. If you follow other links on the Cambrian web page you will find out how to order photocopies of the article from Swansea Central Library. If someone has access to the Times Digital Archive, for example if their local library has a subscription, it could be that the trial and subsequent events will have been reported there as well, though perhaps without local detail. William Edwards and LewisRoberts Help please Hello everyone! I have an ancestor called William Edwards (aka Will o' the Coed) and these are the details that I have about him. I would love to find out some more and would be grateful for ideas. The notes below were given to me by a relative but I don't know who discovered these facts. 1812 Lewis Roberts, Wm Richards, Ann Jones and Wm Williams were witnesses giving evidence against William Edwards 'Where as William Edwards was guilty of feloniously and maliciously shooting Lewis Roberts'. He was sentenced to be transported for life to the coast of New South Wales (The Criminal Register Indexes show that he was actually sentenced to be hanged for shooting Lewis with intent.) Hereford Journal 8 April 1812 (Reporting on the Oxford circuit Monmouthshire Assizes the previous week) W Edwards was charged with wilfully having shot at Lewis Roberts so as to maim and disfigure him. Found guilty and sentenced to death - Reprieved.
