    3. G'day David I saw your request about Phipps and Roynon a couple of days ago and replied about the Roynon name. Since I saw your posting we had an email from a friend who still lives in the same street as my wife did in Llwynypia, Rhondda, about 50 years ago. He mentioned one of his friends who used to live across the street from my wife's house. The friend's name was Phipps. Whether or not they originated in Somerset or Monmouthshire, I don't know but both my wife and I have ancestors from Somerset who came to Wales to work in the collieries that were booming at the turn of the 19th Century. 3. Thanks again Ray, not sure if you've seen my reply to your original response. Yes, the name Phipps, seems to occur (relatively) frequently in that SE corner of Wales, as indeed does Phillips. I'm only very recently onto this line, but the odd thing seems to be that my Trelleck-based Phipps seem to make a guest appearance for a single generation, or rather as a single family with parents and three children, then disappear despite the fact that two of the three children were male and may have themselves fathered Phipps in due course, and that I can account in my tree for the only daughter, Sarah. I have Griffees elsewhere in my tree where I can see within a single village comparing the 1841 and 1851 censuses that one family changed from being Griffee to Griffin (and then stayed that way later) quite possibly to avoid name confusion between individuals in the two very large families. Not sure if that might explain the Phipps - Phillips link though. Thanks again David
