An enumeration district was considered to be roughly equivalent to the area that a census worker or "enumerator" could cover in one day. Some parishes may have only one district, others will have many. By clicking the link next to the enumeration district number you can see the handwritten description of the area that comprises the district. Searching the census records by enumeration district allows a researcher to see their ancestor in context of their closest neighbors. You may also learn additional information about family members who live nearby. http://content.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/view.aspx? dbid=8059&iid=MONRG11_5271_5275-0776 the enumerator is David Jones "All that part of the Parish of Machem that comprisies the whole Hamlet of Machen Lower. It made use of cheap small coal from the Waunfawr Colliery, which was otherwise only of use in lime-burning kilns. A number of cottages were built around the copper works, again on the Machen side of the river. In 1811 the company issued its own copper tokens. The copper works closed in 1816, becoming the site of David Morris's chemical works. http://www.riscamuseum.org.uk/risca.html he chemical works became Southwood Jones,s Danygraig brickworks in 1895. There is still a brickworks on the site today, making concrete bricks rather than firebricks.
