I sent a reply to this thread yesterday and signed off my system shortly afterwards before the message arrived back on my system. I found that my mail software had stripped out the body of my message which is shown above. My apologies to those who like me are scratching their heads over the empty message. Hope this helps Regards Ray Lewis Hazelmere Western Australia Surname Interests Davies: Jones Lewis:
Empty messages sometimes happen when the message is sent using HTML - If you are using Outlook or Outlook express then click on Format on the menu bar and then click on plain text before writing your message. This should ensure that it arrives with us as it left you. Rootsweb long ago realised that viruses can't live in plain text they need the coding of HTML so they set up their mail servers to work with plain text. I don't really understand it I am just quoting the stuff I was told eleven years ago when I first became a list admin. Ann Macey List Admin in cloudy Newport Gwent
Thanks to Ann & Ray for the response. I have visited the web site for RN info and will return there when my head is more clear..VBG. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Macey" <annmacey@ntlworld.com> To: <monmouthshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 18, 2007 3:53 AM Subject: Re: [MON] was British Army Records - empty messages > Empty messages sometimes happen when the message is sent using HTML - If > you > are using Outlook or Outlook express then click on Format on the menu bar > and then click on plain text before writing your message. Dear Ann I understand the reason why Rootsweb took this course of action, as outlined in your own email. It would, however, be even more helpful if the sender of any email written in HTML were to receive an auto-reply telling them that their posting had not been delivered, and why, so that they could take corrective action by resending in plain text, and then list members like Ray wouldn't be so perplexed. Perhaps you could feed this idea 'back up the line'? It would be helpful wouldn't it? and the list admins have said this on lots of occasions. It takes time for the rewording of bounce messages to travel through the channels that have developed at rootsweb. All I can suggest is that anyone who wants to make this point can go to the rootsweb home page www.rootsweb.com and click on Help on the menu bar and then send a message to the staff asking for this to be done. If they see messages from list members as well as list admins it might make a difference. Ann
