    3. I assume you have looked at www.old-maps.co.uk or else the rather more user-friendly http://www.british-history.ac.uk/map.asp to look at a detailed map of Newport Docks area in the 1880s. Not all wharves kept the same name but there may be a works or street with that name nearby. Also worth starting with GENUKI and trying to track down any history online of Newport Docks. You might also find some interesting stuff by searching for '1848 cholera'. Cholera actually hit South Wales much harder in 1849 than 1848 so '1849 cholera Newport'.     3. On the 1917 OS map of Newport it shows lots of Wharves along the river. One that might be of note i on the Town side of the river downstream of the town bridge. Where Corn street used to run into Skinner Street take a straight line across the railway and the canal and you will find Corn Mill or Cinderhill wharf. There were many other Wharves along the river, not just those where the present docks are today. Ann Macey
