I wonder if someone could help with this place name. On the 1851 Census of Merthyr I have John and Martha Roach born at Uterdcumb, Pembrokeshire, I have failed to find any similar name. Any help will be appreciated, Richard Roynon
Richard Believe it or not the image looks to me like H'fordwest ie. Haverfordwest! However the man I assume to be the same one is still living in Merthyr in 1861 and on that occasion his place of birth is given as Castlemartin, which is nowhere near Haverfordwest! I couldn't find him in 1871. I disagree with the comment that Castlemartin is nowhere near Haverfordwest it's about 16 miles away! In 1861 John is from Castlemartin and Martha from Carew. (Glam FHS transcription) In 1851 John and Martha are both from Haverfordwest (GlamFHS transcription) 1851 image shows H'fordwest Ancestry transcriptions can be imaginative! Hi Richard Looking at the image and the taking into pronunciation and the way it may have been interpreted, what about Aberfordwest, i.e. Haverfordwest. On the 1861 census they are down as being born in Castlemartin and Carew. Hope this helps Steve -----Original Message----- From: monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of RRoynon@aol.com Sent: 19 July 2007 15:54 To: MONMOUTHSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [MON] Place Name I wonder if someone could help with this place name.
