hi can anybody tell me where colliers row was, its in the census as upper machen, but i know that covered crosskeys and risca, i think it was in risca but not sure, cheers sue
Hi Sue You contacted me about this in April. This was the original reply. Colliery Row, Lower Machen was actually in Risca. The parish of Lower Machen extended to the river Ebbw which runs through Risca, although Machen is the other side of the mountain. That's why parts of Pontymister and Risca which were one side of the river are in L Machen. My Dixons are on the same page as your family, and as far as I can work out Colliery Row is near the Blackvein Colliery. (now gone) If you go to www.oldmaps.co.uk and type in 323124 191309 as the coordinates the centre of the map will show more or less where Colliery Row was. Click on the enlarged view and look for Madart Cottage. To the right is Cwm Byr Colliery and down a bit is a Well. In front of this is the river and then a row of houses. I believe these houses are Colliery Row, unless someone else can tell me different. If you want any more help email me off list. There is an excellent book Man of the Valleys about William Paget who used to live in Colliery Place which is in the same area.
