Mr. E.A. CHARLES protested at the meeting of the Newport Town Council, against the recommendation to appoint the Town Clerk as clerk to the assessment committee (under the Rating and Valuation Act) at a salary of £100 a year. This, he said, was not the time to give an increase to an official whose salary already would be £1,200 per annum on January next. The new committee would not function until April next, and he moved an amendment that the motion be not adopted. Mr. W.H.B. WILLIAMS seconded, and said it was a case of "to him that hath shall be given and he shall have in abundance." Ultimately the recommendation was carried on the understanding that the additional salary would not commence until April 1 next. The assessment committee was appointed as follows:- Alderman T. PARRY and Councillors, LINTON, RAIKES, CLISSITT, CROWTHER, and Mrs. Ann A. JONES, Messrs. L.H. HORNBY, W.T. DUKE-WILLIAMS, and W.
