The large and representative attendance at the funeral of the late Councillor Edward DAVIES, J.P., at Newport on Thursday testified to the high esteem in which he was held by all sections of the community. The Mayor (Mr. C.T. CLISSITT), members of the corporation, and other public bodies were present at the service at St. Paul's Church, the vicar (the Rev. A. A. MATTHEWS) officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.F. DAVIES. The late Mr. DAVIES was a sidesman of St. Paul's, and his fellow church officers acted as bearers. The chief mourners were:- Mr.and Mrs. Edward John DAVIES and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert DAVIES (sons and daughters-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred LEWIS (son-in-law and daughter), Mrs. W.T. DAVIES, Pontnewydd (daughter-in-law), Messrs. Arthur, Ernest, Allan and Jack DAVIES, the Misses Nancy LEWIS and Gwen and Edna DAVIES, and Master Melville Edward LEWIS (grandchildren), Mr. William DAVIES (brother), Mr. J.H. THOMAS, M.P. (nephew), and Mrs J.H. THOMAS, Mr. Osborne THOMAS and Mr. William BETHELL (brothers-in-law), Mr. George HAYNES and Mr. Allan DAVIES, (nephews), and Mr. William REES (an old friend). Also present were the Mayor of Newport, Alderman W.C. PHILLIPS, Alderman J. Lloyd DAVIES, Alderman T.H. HOWELL, Alderman Graham W. WHITE, Councillors C.F. WILLIAMS, Griffith J.JONES, E.A. CHARLES, W.A. LINTON, Mrs. M.A. JONES, A.T.W. JAMES, W.J. WALL, H. UZZELL, J. S. JOHNSON, and R.W. GWATKIN; Mr. E.J. ARNOLD (representing the town-clerk), Superintendent W.H. ROBINSON, Divisional Inspector G. HILES and a detatchment of the borough police, Mr. N.T.J. MOSES (borough controller), Dr. Howard JONES (medical officer of health), Mr. G.W. MOORES (representing the education department), Mr. J.K. MILLWARD (representing the directors of the Raoyal Gwent Hospital), Mr. S.G. JONES (representing the Work-peoples Hospital Fund), Messrs. W. MORDEY, J.P., W. Lyndon MOORE, J.P., D.L., C.P. SIMMONDS, J.P., Chas. COLLIER, J.P., W. RUDD, J.P., J.H. SWALLOW (manager, Newport Docks), Fred JONES, T.S. GOWER, and Col. S.D. INGRAM. One of the last public duties which the late Councillor DAVIES performed was to make a presentation to Mr. Robert HANCOCK, president of the Newport district of the National Association of Plasterers,Granolithic and Cement Workers, on behalf of the members to mark the attainment of his fiftieth year of membership of the association. The funeral took place on Thursday, at Gelligaer Parish Churchyard, of Mr. William Gwynne LEWIS, Tanybryn, Hengoed-road, Penpedairheol, near Gelligaer. Mr. LEWIS was 74 years of age and a native of Ebbw Vale. His early life was spent as a patternmaker at the works there. Subquently he rose to a posistion of trust, and eighteen years go retired from the position of clerk to the coal and mines department at the Ebbw Vale Coal and Iron Company's Works, and took up residence at Gelligaer. The officiating clergy were the Revs. Canon T. Jesse JONES, O.B.E., M.A. (rector), D.J. PRITCHARD (Gilfach), and Llew. J. JONES, B.A. (Gelligaer). The mourners were.- Mrs. M. JONES, Gelligaer (sister), Mrs. MORGAN and daughter, Llangorse; Mr. and Mrs. H. WATERS, Beaufort; Mr. MILBURN, Llangorse, Mr. and Mrs. HORGUST, Llangorse; Mr. H. PARRY, Ebbw Vale; Mr. S.H. DAVIES, and Mr. S.W. LEWIS (cousins). The South Wales Wesleyan Synod concluded its sittings at Wesley Chapel, Swansea, on Thursday. The following were appointed as ministerial delegates to the Wesleyan Conference at York;- The Revs. C. W.HARRIS (Swansea), Robert WATKINS (Cardiff), W.L. OAKES, B.D. (Cardiff), J.S. CORLETT (Aberdare), D.J. WILLIAMS, B.A. (Brynmawr), W.B. TREWHELLA (Rhondda), W.A. BETHEL (Haverfordwest), and Jas. FIELDING (Newport). Messrs. H. DANIELS (Cardiff), D.N. HEAP (Cardiff), E.J.R. COOK (Risca), Jos. MOTLEY (Dowlais), E.H. THOMAS (Aberbeeg), and W.K.R. GRIFFITHS (Pembroke) were recommended as candidates for the ministry. John Patrick
