Hello to all, When my 3x great grandfather Joseph Hodges died at Lower Machen in 1838 he bequeathed the Garn Farm to his wife Elizabeth. A search of the Census' reveals that the farm was still in family hands in 1901. (don't know about the inhabitants on the 1911 one) It would seem that the farm was still owned by the family in 1917 as my grandfather inherited it from his father who died in that year in Australia. During the WW1 grandfather worked in munitions in England but before he returned to Australia in 1919 he applied for leave to carry out land transactions. I assume that this would have been the sale of the farm which, it seems, was at some stage since then split up with some of the land combining with Tir-y-Cwm farm next door and the rest remaining as what today is called Garn Cottage in Risca. If you are still with me my question is, would there be records surviving of the sale of the farm in those years and who/where would I contact to find such information? Looking forward to a reply, Llew Hodges Far North Queensland Australia
