    3. The Census Summary book shows the word Apart in front of Henry Crowhurst. This could indicate that this was an apartment on the house, as the previous household were at the same address. The Original Census record shows Mary age 47, married 21 years having had only one child, that child still alive, James, born in Pontypool, age 3. Presumably when the census enumerator started off listing who lived in each address on his patch Henry was there, but by census night he was away from home. It is probably not relevant but the Army records on Ancestry include a Henry Francis CROWHURST b abt 1869 on Maidstone, Kent who enlisted in 1888 in the Bedfordshire regiment and then transferred to the West Kent Regiment. There is no sign he was in Canada. He was in Londonderry in 1895 and discharged after 7 years service at Cork in 1897 to work as a cook and waiter in a hotel. He seems to have been recalled to service in 1901 and deserted in 1902 in Maidstone. Father was not James. If Mary was 47, born about 1864, and married at age 25 or so, it is likely that Henry was of a similar age. There are two Henry Crowhurst in 1871 census with father called James - one a Coachman's son age 5 in Knightsbridge, London and one an agricultural labourer's son in Southfleet, Kent, age 4. Neither mother is called Mary. The Coachman's son seems to have been a carpenter in 1881, boarding with his sisters in Westminster In 1861 census there is a Henry Crowhurst age 11 with father James, an agricultural labourer, in Wilmington, Sussex. Mother was Sarah. Your best way forward might be to try and find any records held on Henry by the Royal Engineers, and perhaps to start by what units they had in Nova Scotia in 1889. However I did obtain a census copy for his wife Mary and son James living at this address but no mention of Henry. Henry was stationed in Halifax Nova Scotia as a sapper with the Royal Engineers when he married Mary Young in June of 1889. He must have been transferred back to England and Mary came over in May of 1903. Their son was born in March 1908. Mary and son returned to Canada in Nov 1912. On James birth registration it shows Marry as being born in Halifax, Yorkshire, is should be Nova Scotia Trying to find out what became of Henry. His parents are listed as James and Mary Crowhurst. 3. G'day list I try to keep a low profile most of the time and do my own research into mining occupations in the 19th C. However, I am stumped at the moment. My great-uncle was described as a latcher at Llanerch colliery. He wasn't involved in the 1890 disaster (he was only 7 at the time). Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or, does anyone know what a latcher was and what did he do? Yes, he must have latched something, but what? Thanks in anticipation. Ray Lewis Hazelmere Western Australia

    3. Hi again Ray, The Oxford Dictionary suggests that it was a person who fastened coal trucks together for movement within mines, latch was the name given to the connecting links between trucks, hence the slang name latcher. Best wishes, Jon

    3. Hi Ray, I know this is an American link, but I'd imagine the Latcher out there could well be the same job over here: "The person who was usually employed as latcher and whose duty it was to send trips from the various side tracks in the mine and tend the switches on the slope, was sent by the mine foreman to help one of the drivers to break in a new mule, and while at that work, the mine foreman had given instructions to each of the other drivers, to send out their trips, and turn the switches at their respective side- tracks until the regular latcher should return to his duty. This had been done for two days." http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/pennsylvania-inspectors-of-mines/reports-of-the-inspectors-of-coal-mines-of-the-anthracite-coal-regions-of--goo/page-37-reports-of-the-inspectors-of-coal-mines-of-the-anthracite-coal-regions-of--goo.shtml Best wishes, Jon

    2. It was very common in Newport and other places when they built a house to give it a name. Growing up in Newport many of the houses had names, every house had a number. My Aunt's house was called Roscarbury the house opposite to where I lived was St. David. Nevada was probably the house name. Wendy

    3. Hi Don I've just had a look at the 1883 and 1920 maps for Barrack (sic) Hill at www.old-maps.co.uk , and the only houses built at that time were at either end of the road, the eastern end nearer the town centre, and around the Barracks at the western end, in what is now Allt-yr-yn View, where there is now a Territorial Army Centre. If Nevada really was the name of the house it wasn't listed on the map, and none of the houses in the area looks large enough to have a name, rather than a number. 3. I am attempting to locate details of the baptisms of two of the children of William and Ann EVANS. In 1841 William, a miner age 35 (rounded) was living in Cwmcelyn, Aberstruth with his wife Ann aged 40 (rounded) and their children Sarah, Mary, Lucrisia, and Margaret, of which only the last two were born in Monmouthshire. Lucrisia was aged 5 and Margaret was aged 2. Margaret's birth was registered as Maria (born Ebbw Vale, Bedwellty parish on 22 February 1839). I have been unable to locate William after the 1841 census. Ann witneesed the marriage of their daughter Sarah to John POTHECARY (my x times gt grandparents) in Llanely, Breconshire) on 7 August 1842 after which she disappeared, as did Mary and Lucrisia! I have details of Sarah's life after her marriage. Margaret (Maria) appeared in the 1851 census living with John ans Sarah POTHECARY and then she too disappeared. I would appreciate any help in locating details of the baptisms of the two youngest girls and also learning what happened to those that disappeared. The surname of course does not help!
