    3. G'day everybody First of thanks for answering my second plea for help in as many weeks. Hopefully, I will get some joy from Gwent Records. They have helped in the past with regard to my wife's errant grandfather who ended his days in Ty Bryn, Tredegar in 1942. 3. If one of the parties was a minor, that is not old enough to marry without parental permission, L.P.Given might mean Legal Permission Given or something similar. At one time I think that members of the regular army also needed permission to marry. Whether that still applied in 1933 I don't know. Prisoners allowed out of prison to marry might also need permission. Unless of course there was an extra witness called L.P.Given Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Syd and Judy" <syd@sydandjudy.freeserve.co.uk> To: <monmouthshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 16, 2012 7:05 PM Subject: [MON] MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE > > Hello, > I have just received a marriage certificate dated 1933 from > Cardiff > and where it says in the presence of us there is the usual two names but > by > the first name it also says L.P. Have used the Archives Wales site to search for Pontypool school registers for the years 1885 - 1892 when I could reasonably expect my late grandfather to have attended school there. No luck, even though I tried a variety of search strategies.. Let me explain and tell you what I know. On the 1891 Census Hector Lewis is shown as living at 8 Upper Bridge Street and he is shown as scholar. He was born in 1878 so I took a stab at 1887 for a reasonable chance that he would be a pupil at one of the local schools. I realise that Pontypool has changed somewhat from that period but is there someone on the list who might know what school(s) he could have attended. That way I might perhaps narrow my search and strike gold. Of course, the school registers for Pontypool may not have survived from that period. If this is the case, I'd still like to know so that I can stop what will be a fruitless search. Thanks in anticipation Ray Lewis Hazelmere Western Australia

    1. [MON] JAMES Llanover & JENKINS Blaenavon
    2. Luned James
    3. Hi Listers    I am  looking for any descendants of the three surviving sons of Thomas & Mary Ann JENKINS of Queen St Blaenavon.   Census 1911 Thomas b 1861 was unmarried & living with his widowed mother, sister & nephew at 59 Queen St Blaenavon. I think he married Alice MURPHY in 1913 (no details)           William b1865 whereabouts unknown           John b1861 married 4 years to widow Mary Ann DASH living at 13 Martin St Blaenavon.   Mary Ann JENKINS nee JAMES b1839 Glandwr Farm, Llanover Upper, d/o William JAMES and his second wife Mary nee JONES formerly of Goytre. Mary Ann and her sisters Rachel & Gwenllian were all baptised together at Goytre in 1843. Rachel & Gwenllian (Gwenny) migrated to the US with their husbands.   Still hoping for some extra pieces of my jigsaw puzzle Luned in Tasmania

    2. Luned James
    3.   Hi Listers, reposting in the hope that someone, one day will be able to add a little piece to my jigsaw puzzle:-) Still looking for JAMES of Glandwr (Lanydoor, Llanydwr, Glunydde, Glundwr Dland Y Dwr), Llanover Upper, pre 1833. First names often Benjamin & William, they owned & rented land in Llanover, Goytre & Trevethin. Not sure if either were churchwardens at St Bartholomews Llanover 1750-1850. I have various wills dating from 1730 - 1830 mentioning Benjamin, William and Enoch but having trouble making any connection with JAMES of Glandwr or anywhere else. William JAMES b1793c  first married Elizabeth JENKINS who died after the birth of William b1831 (about), William then married Mary JONES of Goytre (parents of Mary Ann who married Thomas JENKINS see next post Abergavenny Lunatic Asylum). William JAMES  & both wives are buried at Hanover Chapel, Llanover. The chapel records are lost, if anyone knows if there are any transcriptions of the chapel records I'd love to know. I have visited the graveyard and taken notes. There is a book Celebrating 350 years of Worship at Hanover by J Glyndwr Harris which covers the chapel's history. It's on the shelf at the Gwent RO but every time I go there it's not there:-( worse, it's out of print. William's parents, Benjamin & Gwenllian JAMES are both buried at St Bartholomew's Llanover, so there must have been a split in the family, Established Church vs Dissenters. Here's hoping Luned in Tasmania

    3. Welcome Lyn, Although we know that every other person in Wales is a Jones, I'll once again post my Jones information.  My great-great grandfather was Philip Jones born about 1828 in Pontypool.  All I know about Philip's parentage is his father was a collier named John as indicated in the Sharon Chapel, Abergavenny,  church marriage records where Philip married Sarah Fear in 1856.   Sarah was born 1834 in Publow, Somerset.  Philip and Sarah had four children:  Samuel, Sarah, John and Mary Jane - all born in Ebbw Vale.  If any of this sounds familiar, I'd love to hear from you. 3. G'day List and particularly Jon and Mike Thanks for the swift response to my inquiry. From both of your replies, my great uncle could have been either. of the two. However, I think it's more likely that he was someone who hitched the trams together. rather than a mine surveyor's assistant. I'll put that down as one of his various occupations My interest in Octavius Jones lies in the plaque which commemorates him on the Pontypool Park Memorial Gates (if they are still there) where he is, as far as I know, the only one from Pontypool killed whilst serving as a member of the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli. Seeing that 2015 marks the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign, I wondered if the Torfaen Council might like to commemorate the occasion in some small way.
