Thanks Megan and Lyn for your suggestions which I hope to follow up soon. Old photos are so lovely, if only people would make a note on the back of who they are. Sometimes hit lucky though! Many thanks, Mary
Dear Listers, Can I once more ask for your advice. I number of photos have come my way which are definately or highly probably members of my husband's Newbery family. I wonder if anyone knows when certain photographers were in business as dates may narrow the field. These are Harris and Co.88, High Street, Merthyr, Newport:C , and HC Lee, Rhymney Also I think the dress syles may also give a clue. Can anyone advise anyone, or a website that might help here. Best wishes, Mary

I would contact the county public library and ask for a look up in the city directories (phone books or business directories) during the dates you are interested in. Also, as for photo help, I would contact Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective... http://www.maureentaylor.com/ She is the "go to girl" for these issues - She does answer questions for people Best of luck! Don't forget the online wills at the national library of Wales. All free access. I have found a few, however they are all older ones. What I found most interesting was seeing the same names appear frequently as benefactors... See http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=487 Cheers Garth
Dear Garet, I'm assuming these will be Welsh wills only. I doubt if my husband's Welsh relatives made will although it will be interesting to check. Dear Ann, Thank you for that. It would seem then that all the births were live births followed by early deaths. So sad to think what the parents went through, especially the poor mother. Mary, One little thing to remember pre 1927 there were no stillborn deaths recorded. If a baby was stillborn it was not given a birth certificate and therefore no death certificate. All the parents had was their memory and possibly the burial register - if they were allowed to bury the child in consecrated ground. Sometimes the child would be put into a grave with another person, not necessarily a relative. And we call those the good old days.. Ann Macey In Sunny (at the moment) Newport, Gwent
Sometimes Mary, researching the history of the town will give you clues to deaths - cholera outbreak etc. See what you can find out about the history of Blaenavon on the internet or in local history books. Then widen the search to a wider area or research infant mortality at that time period and you may find it is not so unusual. Dear Lyn, Your suggestions make sense. If anyone knows which records may be helpful I would be glad of any further suggestions. Meanwhile I will google! see http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills I googled obtaining wills On 08/06/2012 08:56, Mary Newbery wrote: > Dear Listers, > I have recently received probate information on a number of relatives courtesy of Marjorie, and I now need someone to remind me how I obtain the relevant wills. > -- Mike Fisher in Droitwich my family tree http://mjfisher.tribalpages.com
Mary -- it depends what time frame you are looking at (ie pre- or post- 1858). The National Archives website has a very informative page on this topic -- look for Wills and Probate Records. If you are within commuting distance of London and your requirement is post 1858, then try Probate Dept., Principal Registry of the Family Division, First Avenue House, High Holburn, WC1 where you can look up the registers (called Calendars) and order a copy of the will (about £6 last time I was there). Much cheaper than going through any of the commercial organisations. I think they offer a telephone service if you have the dates of grant of probate. There should be other centres in the country offering the same facility. Dear Listers, I have recently received probate information on a number of relatives courtesy of Marjorie, and I now need someone to remind me how I obtain the relevant wills. A second, non connected question is regarding death information. My husband's grandparents, living in Blaenavon in the early 20th century lost 5 of their 8 children. This seemed a very high rate for the time and I would like to know cause of death, but that is just a very high number of certificates to buy. Can anyone advise me if the registry office might be willing to disclose this information for a smaller fee. I don't need the certificates just the information ie premature birth, childhood disease, cot death. I know conditions in Blaenavon may have been poor and polluted but the level of deaths seems excessive. I know two were twins which may have been one reason. Best wishes, Mary
Hi I have found when it comes to transcriptions, both are similar, and sometimes one will find a particular entry that the other does not find, but not much differences between them. The actual scans of the census pages however is a little different. Where comparisons of the two have been done, I have found that in almost all cases, the Find My Past has the better census scans, especially on those faint/hard to read pages. ----- Original Message ----- From: <azusuk1@aol.com> To: <monmouthshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2012 12:47 AM Subject: [MON] census data - source? > > I need to access the various census from 1841 to 1911 again but would > appreciate guidance on which sources (Ancestry, Find my--) are used by > most listers. > Regards > David > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > MONMOUTHSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
I also use Ancestry for censuses, they now have the 1911 England one, not sure about the Wales as I haven't had occasion to look up anyone from there yet.
