Hi Lewis, One lister suggested the name in 1861 was Ellior which would make perfect sense to me. As Job was from Wiltshire and likely wasn't able to write, Hellier in a west country accent would sound like Ellior, or Ellier. Tracking his wife Margaret back through the 1851 and 1841 censuses and tying up with freebmd info all ads up: Margaret Phillpott, (dau of William and charlotte Phillpott) married John Forward Abergavenny 1846. Son Samuel with mum and grandparents in 1851. Margaret Forward married Job Hillier Abergavenny 1853. Job and Margaret appear in 1861 as Ellios or Ellior with 3 children Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Thomas. Margaret Hellier married Charles Escott Abergavenny 1869. Jane Escott born Abergavenny 1870. 1871 census, Margaret appears with the surname Day, so does her daughter Jane, but the children from her previous marriage were still named Hellier. 1881 much the same. 1891 Margaret is with daughter and son in law Isaac and Maria Jenkins, and Margaret's surname is once again Escott. Many thanks for your help and interest and to everyone else who replied over this query. Kind regards, JOn

In January I posted messages about marriage of Hannah PITT to a Thomas THOMAS in 1806 in Herefordshire. She died in 1868 in Cusop, Herefordshire, a widow, with his occupation listed as cooper. Her siblings and relatives lived in Herefordshire and just across the borders in various Welsh areas. Would like to thank those who helped in learning more about Hannah and helped to eliminate some Thomas THOMAS individuals from list of possible matches. Some answered directly and others via the respective lists. Thanks to Polly Rubery, Ken Thomas, Bryan Thomas, Alec Whitfield, Delphine in Brisbane, Bill Harrison, Jan James in Western Australia, Liz McAsey. Will continue in my search to find out more about Thomas THOMAS, a cooper, who apparently died before 1840. Thanks for your willingness to help and clues to follow. Ruth Ann Baker United States
Janet As I'm sure you know the UK is full of 'lovely old churches' - each of them costs a great deal of money to maintain the structure, and as church congregations fall steadily there is really no case to be made for that expenditure. If the numbers in the congregation fall beyond a critical mass their spiritual needs are catered for in another nearby church, maybe in the next town, and the land sold off to generate income which can be used to bolster up church activity elsewhere. Robert -----Original Message----- From: monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JANLWH@aol.com Also, why would they tear down a lovely old Baptist church?

Robert, No I didn't know that the UK was full of lonely old churches. I have never been there. Our church here in Virginia started in a store front until they saved up the money to buy land and build the first 2 buildings. My husband helps with the grounds care and loves it. In my family photo album, which contains family charts, the houses that we lived in as far back as I can find, the places that we worked and also the churches that we worship(ed) in. When I come to Wales on the trip that I have been saving many many years for, I want to take pictures of the homes my ancestors lived in, the places they worked and the church's they worshiped in. It is a heritage that I want to pass on to the younger members in the family. So far a person from Aberdare volunteered to take a photo of the house my grandmother grew up in until she was 13 and the family immigrated to the USA. I had it framed for my Dad. He died about a year and a half ago but he did have the picture for about a year before he died. I know that it meant a lot to him and I am forever grateful to this young man. I hope to be able to do the same for someone some day. Thanks so much for the explanation, as I am not at all up on things in the UK. Take care, Janet
John, thanks for the information. I am a big fan of grave yards and reading old gravestones. Janet
I noticed on these pictures that there is a Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery that is old and in the town of Nantyglo wants to landscape it but the graves will have to be moved. They have to get permission from the living relatives and many of them are in America. I was wondering if there is a list of who is buried there somewhere on line? I had ancestors in the area and if any of mine are buried in this cemetery, I would gladly give my permission. I know that I am only one person but that is a start. My family was Stephens, Wall, Lloyd and Jenkins in the area. My family immigrated to the coal fields of north eastern Pennsylvania, USA in the 1880's and 1890's. I was noticing that the pictures of Nantyglo and looking up the valley road to Bryn Mawr where my ancestors lived looks so very very much like the Wyoming Valley area of north eastern Pennsylvania to where my grandparents immigrated to work in the coal mines!!!!! The houses are different but they did build them close to the road like that in this area of Pennsylvania. My husband who is from the mid western US always asks my why the houses in my home town in Pennsylvania were built so close to the road. Perhaps, for the same reason that they did here in this area here in Wales because they are some of the one's who built the homes in Pennsylvaina I sure do enjoy this pictures and view them each week! Also, why would they tear down a lovely old Baptist church? Take care, Janet
