Hi Bob I stayed overnight at the West Usk lighthouse - now an unusual B&B - a couple of years ago and went for a meal in St Brides! I couldn't find William in 1861 but ten years earlier he was living in St Brides with his mother Blanche and three siblings (twins David and John aged 10, and Isaac aged 6). Blanche had married a farmer called Adam Williams and they already had a daughter of their own - Sarah aged 3. Everyone in the house was born in St Brides except Blanche, who was born up the road in Bassaleg (now a suburb of Newport). Hello Bob, Have you obtained the marriage certificate for them which would at least give you the name of both fathers, and also obtaining his birth certificate which would also give you his mothers maiden name, and knowing this for William senior would give you a better scope of finding him before 1871. In 1861 he more than likely was still unmarried and possibly living with parents. Regards Barbara

G'day Renee There is a Catherine Barry registered Newport, Mon June Q 1852, Vol 11a, Page 152 (which would be about right if you've used US date format from her death certificate)on a FreeBMD search of the years 1845 - 1855 for Monmouthshire. Also another in December 1854. Neither could not have appeared on the 1851 Census not having been born at the time. There are a number of Mary Barry's from 1856 - 1862. Two were registered in Pontypool, one in 1860, the other in 1862. I don't know if this helps but the FreeBMD search website http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl will show those GRO entries that have been transcibed to date for the years you seek. That's where I got the information above. Hi all I have a John Hughes in my tree who was my gg - grandfather. I also have a whole scenario for him which I now think is wild surmise and wishful thinking, so have decided to go back to basics. The known facts are these - he had two daughters called Catherine (sometimes spelt Catharine) with Mary, who presumably he married. Catharine No 1 was baptised at St Mary's Monmouth on August 1825, - parents John and Mary Hughes, he a sailmaker, spelling Catharine. She didn't last long and was buried 17 Sep 1825. They had another crack at the name five years later and Catharine No 2 was baptised 9 May 1830 in Monmouth. John is now a labourer. He fails to appear on any censuses, though Mary and Catharine do. The only other sighting is Catharine's marriage certificate of 13 Jun 1852, in which John is a sailmaker again and it doesn't say deceased. Mary could be a widow in 1851 census for St James Street, Monmouth, though hard to read. I've checked the transcripts on Mike John's site as well as the PRs in Gwent RO and have come up with a host of John baptisms and burials and several John and Mary marriages, and have also sent off for 2 death certificates: 1) Sept 1/4 1837 v26 p 43.This is John Hughes, an innkeeper, who coincidentally married another Mary. They ran a pub in Agincourt Square called the Reformers' Tavern. I had thought this guy might be the father of mine, but now doubt it. 2) Jun 1842 V26 p53 - sent for. Not him as too young (21 year old b 1821, son of Thomas). John and Mary are such common names it's hard to see the wood for the trees so what I thought would be a good plan is to round up some suspects and eliminate them from my enquiries! To this end, if anyone has ANY John Hughes, of an age to be begetting children in the 1820s and 30s, in Monmouth or immediate environs (I suspect that given his sailmaking occupation, if he is not in Monmouth itself, he is at least likely to be near the Wye, maybe even on the other side?) could you please let me have his details, parents and children. I don't need ancestors going back to the ark! If I can establish who he isn't, I might have a better idea of who he is! Or any other suggestions for identifying this pesky ancestor would be most welcome. Many thanks TTFN Joss
Ian I have relatives in the 1851 census and their 'civil Parish or township' is listed as 'St Woollos' so I suspect that while it did not become an ecclesiastical parish until later it was still a civil parish for the purposes of the census. I can't really comment on the quality of the census information but I have found people on one census search engine that were not found on a different one! I can only suggest that you go back to the microfich census records and scan through that particular area and address. I am researching the Pugh and Nicholls family living around Newport in the 1800's. In particular I am looking for the decendants of Anna Louisa Pugh who married Ernest George Nicholls who were married in the 1900's. I have a lot of information on the Nicholls side going back to Somerset around 1789 with James Nicholls. I would like to hear from anyone researching the same families. Andrew
A lovely name ELLIOR, it has Viking overtones and would not be out of place in "Beowulf" the old Frisians and Half Danes. Importance: High Hi Lewis, One lister suggested the name in 1861 was Ellior which would make perfect sense to me. As Job was from Wiltshire and likely wasn't able to write, Hellier in a west country accent would sound like Ellior, or Ellier. Tracking his wife Margaret back through the 1851 and 1841 censuses and tying up with freebmd info all ads up: Margaret Phillpott, (dau of William and charlotte Phillpott) married John Forward Abergavenny 1846. Son Samuel with mum and grandparents in 1851. Margaret Forward married Job Hillier Abergavenny 1853. Job and Margaret appear in 1861 as Ellios or Ellior with 3 children Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Thomas. Margaret Hellier married Charles Escott Abergavenny 1869. Jane Escott born Abergavenny 1870. 1871 census, Margaret appears with the surname Day, so does her daughter Jane, but the children from her previous marriage were still named Hellier. 1881 much the same. 1891 Margaret is with daughter and son in law Isaac and Maria Jenkins, and Margaret's surname is once again Escott. Many thanks for your help and interest and to everyone else who replied over this query.
