Thanks Barbara, The only hint of birthplaces I have are from the 1861 census: for Jane WATERS, "Stepinage", Herts (which must be Stevenage) and for William, Llanthiwy (Llanddewi Fach) MON (which I have n ot yet located. I have not chased down Wm. yet, but Jane's b. or bap. does not appear in the IGI. Arnold WATERS, listed as Jane's father, and a carpenter on her m. cert. seems to have had previous connection with Caerleon or somewhere else in MON because that name appears as a witness in numerous marriages from about 1770 on. I'm reasonably sure this is my tribe because of the appearance of "Augustus" Do you have any idea where "Chestowe Hill" is? Thanks again for your help. M. Elliot-Jones
Hello, can anyone tell me where to find Parish Records for Bedwellty. And to any locals, how far is Bedwellty from Cardiff. Thank you Pat
Hello, There are Parish records at the Church and it would be at a cost of £5 a name, and only Church Staff can search the books for you. What years do you seek and would it be burials at the Churchyard. Regards Barbara
Hello, The Census record that you listed in your email was 1861 not 1871. In 1851 they were still living in the same location 1851 Census William Higgs Head age 37 Jane Higgs Wife age 37 William Higgs Son age 9 Emma Higgs Daur age 7 Charles Higgs Son age 2 H0107/2451 FOLIO 78 PAGE 16 1841 Census William Higgs age 25 born in County Jane Higgs age 25 not born in County Elizabeth Higgs age 1 not born in County H0107/745/9 FOLIO 4 PAGE 2 Elizabeth the first child is not listed on other Census records so may have died before 1851. Regards Barbara
Hello, Where were they born, and dates if possible because you are not sure of which Census record you have. Regards Barbara
Thanks to all who responded. I've now located the church using Google Earth at 51-32-52N and 2-56-56W. May I ask for a lookup to resolve a puzzle. I have, from a correspondent several years ago: << this looks like them in 1861 census index: 4013 51 11 HIGGS, William, 48 Jane, 48 William, 18 Emma, 16 Esther, 14 Charles, 11 Clara, 9 Augustus, 5 >> Given their ages in the 1881, the above looks like the 1871 census, not the 1861. I'd appreciate a lookup of this family in one or more of the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses, including the census location, etc. Their location in MON appears as Caerleon, and sometimes as Newport in later documents. I think Wm. HIGGS was a farmer. Thanks M M. Elliot-Jones Santa Rosa, CA

Hello list, I have a marr. cert. from 1838 indicating location as: "Parish Church" in the "Parish of Nash" county of "Monmouth." Does anyone know of this church? Does it still exist? Does anyone have pictures or descriptions of it that they could share? My interests are HIGGS and WATERS from 1700 to about 1860. One farmed in Caerleon as of the 1841 census. One Arnold WATERS was a carpenter in the mid-19th century. My branch left for London sometime between 1861 and 1881. Thanks MEJ M. Elliot-Jones Santa Rosa, CA
Dear Listers John Williams born Monmouthshire about 1850 Married Ellen Foxlow in Altrincham 4/11/1875 painter & decorator Living in Fulham London when wife died in 1879 daughter Jane Living in Chelsea 1881 Married Catherine Fuller 1884 Living in Paddington 1901 Does anyone have any connections/knowledge of this John Williams? Regards Marion
Dear Listers, I think I have at last found a death record for WILLIAM HUGH DERRICK HODGES in the district of Caerleon and have ordered a copy of his death certificate. In the meantime does anyone have access to MIs for the Cemeteries that would be included in that Registration District. His death is registered in the first quarter of 1965 and I think he would have been buried in either the Parish Church or Public cemeteries. With thanks, Llew Hodges Far North Queensland Australia
