    1. [MON] Government Response to E-Petition on Census Data
    2. Peter Williams
    3. I have just received the following from H.M. Government: The e-petition asking the Prime Minister to "reduce the classified period for census data from 100 years to 70 years" has now closed. This is an email response from HM Government. Thank you for signing the e-petition calling for the closure period on census data to be reduced from its present 100 years to 70 years for the 1911, 1921 and 1931 censuses. The Government understands the frustrations this delay can cause, particularly to people who are researching their family history. But these frustrations have to be balanced against the assurances given to people at the time about confidentiality. This also has implications today, for public confidence in the privacy of information which people provide in future censuses. Clearly, the importance of the personal information provided in the census is that it enables a detailed and accurate picture to be built up of our society. This is of great assistance to Government and to the community as a whole in helping shape policies and set priorities for the future. But unless people believe that the personal data they provide - which includes details of their occupation and who is living with them - will remain confidential and secure as they have been promised, the danger is that they might feel reluctant to give sensitive information. It is for this reason that there is a policy of a 100-year delay before releasing the personal data in the census. The purpose is to minimise the risk of embarrassment both to those living and to their immediate descendants. The Government does not believe this policy should be altered or the explicit assurances given to people at the time broken. You might like to know, however, that the 1911 census was not taken under this Act. The census returns are held by the National Archives, not the Office for National Statistics. Plans are underway to set up an on-line search service of the 1911 census by 2009, although again personally sensitive material will not be released until 2011. The National Archives will also respond to certain requests for information on the 1911 census under the Freedom of Information Act. On a sadder note, the 1931 census records were destroyed by fire during the Second World War. We know this reply will disappoint many people, but hope you will understand that in the long-term, the reasons given are in the best interests of preserving the census for future generations. 2. Hugh, Funny that you should mention SLC. We are going to CA in May or June for an extended trip and are driving. A very good friend is a professional genealogist in SLC and he wants us to stop either going or coming and we plan to! Hopefully, I have enough time to get into everything that I am researching including all of my Mom's family who were in the USA from the mid 1600's (her last family coming in 1804 from Germany) and most important her Native American ancestors as she is 1/6 Native American (they can be very hard to research). It is my Dad's family that is from Wales and Cornwall and Wiltshire. Janet ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. 1. [MON] Family History Library - research
    2. Hello: The Family History "LIBRARY" is in Salt Lake City. Smaller satellites throughout the world are called Family History "CENTERS". Thus, the centers are smaller, have limited hours, and limited resources on hand. If you can NOT travel to Salt Lake City (USA) to do research, you can view the same microfische and microfilm at a local Family History Center (satellite) near your home. To find a Family History Center near your home, go to the webpage at www.familysearch.org. In most cases, you must pay a small fee to pay for the shipping costs. If you are lucky enough to go to Salt Lake City, plan your research IN ADVANCE in order to make the most of your time. For example, know the hours of the library, holiday closure dates, and parking information. The following webpage provides library rules, library floor plan, helpful hints about visiting Salt Lake City, and helps to prepare to visit the library: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHL/frameset_library.asp BEFORE you go to Salt Lake City, organize your research and know what you want to find or search. Review the online Family History Catalog and learn what films (or books) are available for your areas or surnames of interest. If your time is limited, view the books (vs the films) since the books are NEVER loaned out. (You can rent the films when you get home). It's easy to become overwhelmed when you walk through the magic doors of the library and behold all of the available research materials. Therefore, be SMART and write down book call numbers, fische numbers, and film numbers along with what you hope to find in each. Don't forget that the Family History Societies in Wales have books, booklets, fische, and CDs available with information that, in some cases, is NOT available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Also, allow a little time in Salt Lake City to be a tourist. Ruth Ann

    3. Hello I am having great difficulty with a place name that I have found on a census image, I just cant make it out, and it is in Monmouthshire, so who better to ask that my fellow listers in Monmouthshire! I am not Welsh and live many miles away, please forgive me for not being able to understand the Welsh words. I can send the census image off list to anyone who thinks they may be able to help me. It looks like Llangatter or Fangattur, South Wales and in the margin the enumerator has written MON., which I take to be Monmouthshire. Many thanks in anticipation Win. _________________________________________________________________ Advertisement: Chat with 1000s of Sexy Singles right now http://a.ninemsn.com.au/b.aspx?URL=http%3A%2F%2Flavalife9%2Eninemsn%2Ecom%2Eau%2Fclickthru%2Fclickthru%2Eact%3Fid%3Dninemsn%26context%3Dan99%26locale%3Den%5FAU%26a%3D25447&_t=754951090&_r=chat&_m=EXT
