    3. Hi. Ancestry.com should give you the index references for the probate for 1937, from which you ought to be able to take that information and apply for the will at the Probate Registry. For further information go to "<http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills>http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills I have applied for many wills from Australia and have found each and every one to have been worth the while. State Libraries also have microfiche or microfilm of the probate indexes from which you may glean the details which include where and when the deceased died or last known address and date, profession, age, whether probate or administration and the names and addresses of executors. If you do not have Ancestry.com at home on your computer, many libraries in Australia both State, Family History Societies, and LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) will have it for free at <http://search.ancestry.com.au/search/db.aspx?dbid=1904>http://search.ancestry.com.au/search/db.aspx?dbid=1904 otherwise some kind soul on the list may check it out for you and find the references. Good fortune in your searching. Graham Melbourne Oz

    3. G'day everyone I have been keeping a very low profile over the last year or so although I still read the postings with interest. As is so often the case in genealogy I need help to solve a problem. Quite by chance I came across a reference to Sarah Ann Lewis which could be my great grandmother. Let me make it clearer. I lost sight of her after the 1901 Census. She is one of the numerous Lewis family from Pontypool who bore a son, my grandfather. He was brought up as her brother as she was only 17 when he was born and there were numerous siblings younger than her. A family story has her marrying a wealthy, ex-military officer whose name has never been mentioned. She was born about 1860 and the reference has a Sarah Ann Lewis, spinster, late of Plasmont, Monmouthshire, who died on 21 October 1936. Her will was executed and a notice in the London Gazette gives a date of 1 April 1937 for full probate. Is there a way in which I can obtain a copy of her will? What I want to know is, first is it my long-lost grandmother and second, if it is her, where had she been all those years since 1916 when her son died, leaving a widow and two sons? I know from my late father that they had a difficult childhood and if family stories are correct she was a well off woman. Can anyone help? Regards

    3. Me again There is a youtube film about William Alfred Lewis, known as Dripping Lewis who was murdered on 24th May 1939. He lived at Plasmont, Pontypool. There is also a book written about him which may be worth following up if Sarah is your relation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwFcisWAW-A There is a link here to a story in the Free Press about the murder http://www.freepressseries.co.uk/news/9213850.Pontypool_Townscape_probes_the _strange_case_of_who_killed_Dripping_Lewis_/ Mr Lewis had a sister Miriam (Pritchard) who was one of the executors to Sarah's will, so the same family, but is it yours? He also left a substantial amount of money. Sarah Ann Lewis was living with her mother Miriam and siblings in Plasmont in 1901 and with Miriam and Alfred Pritchard in Law Courts? Hotel, Cardiff in 1911. 3. G'day Ray, Thanks for the suggestion. I have looked on Ancestry and Find My Past for Thomas, Gwenllian and Charles in 1841. I cannot find any of them on either. There is one Gwenllian married to a Daniel, so not a match. Ancestry has changed their site and it is much more time consuming and I find it lacks a lot of information so is quite frustrating. The same can be said for Find My Past as well. Cheers, Gillian Melbourne On 9/19/2012 4:47 PM, The Lewis family wrote: > G'day Gilian > > Have you tried the 1841 Census? 3. Thank you Dawn. I had found this record recently and because the 1851 Census has his birth as 1813 was unsure about it, but it could very well be him as I find dates and places seem to be different for people in the different Census years. At this point I think I will go with this because he named one son Charles. Cheers, Gillian On 9/19/2012 5:44 AM, Dawn Cumbley wrote: > Hi Gilliam > > Maybe this is the one?? 2. Gillian
    3. Hello everyone, I am hoping someone on the ground there or through better searching knowledge than I have can help. I am trying to gain information on my GGGGrandfather Thomas LAWRENCE. I have found him and his family in the 1851 Census. According to that he was born in St. Mellons about 1813. His wife Jane was born in Newport about 1823. I have matched Jane and Thomas in a marriage in 1843 and her maiden name is EVANS. They have 4 sons, Edwin 1845, John F 1847, Charles 1849 and Thomas 1851. I have been able to move forward and find information on some of their children, particularly Thomas LAWRENCE born 1851 - my GGGrandfather. In the 1861 Census two daughters have been born after four sons. Jane is now widowed so I think Thomas has died between 1858 and 1861 because Mary Jane is only 2 years of age. Thomas and his 4 sons were Colliers and Thomas worked in Glamorganshire for a period of time where Edwin was born. Between the 1861 and 1871 Census Jane died as the young Thomas and Caroline are living with Edwin the oldest son of Thomas senior. If anyone can help me with information about Thomas LAWRENCE prior to the 1851 census, ie, his parents or birth/baptism or death information I would be very grateful. Or any other information about Jane would be appreciated. I hope I haven't overloaded you with too much information as this is the first request for me and I am so glad I found this help group. I can provide more info or attach the census docs if required. Cheers, Gillian Melbourne
