Dear Listers, In researching the branch of my family that descended through William Hugh Derrick Hodges I have purchased his death certificate. It states that he died in St. Cadock Hospital, Caerleon 1965 and that the informant was his son H.H. Hodges who was living at 9 Merlin Crescent , Newport. Does anyone have access to any records like phone books or electoral rolls of that date or a little more recent that might give a clue as to what the H.H. stand for. With thanks. Hello Everyone, New to list. Looking for help with the Crandell family. My wife is trying to locate any information on the above family. John Crandall born about 1612 in the area of Chepstow. He we believe became a Baptist Elder and came to Rhode Island. It is said that he and others received a Royal Charter from King Charles the Second about 1663. It is suggested that all Crandells in North America are descended from him. Any suggestions where to look for records would be appreciated. We are planning a trip to Great Britain and would like to have an idea where to look. Bill Bowman In Brantford "The Telephone City"
Is anyone else researching this DAVIES family. John DAVIES b. 1857 Tredegar Annie WALL b. 1866 Tillingham, Hereford wife children: Margaret 1888 Newbridge Joseph 1890 David 1891 Winnifred 1895 William 1899 John 1900 *Cyril Walter 1903 Mary Lizzie 1887 Cyril Walter DAVIES married Susannah Louisa Hiskett 1903, Llanhilleth, Mon. These were my Grandparents. There was little contact with Cyril DAVIES family and I am hoping to connect with descendents of this family and/or find any new information from the 1900"s. Cyrils father John DAVIES is the son of Benjamin DAVIES and Mary MORGAN who married in Merthyr in 1844. Benjamin was a carpenter and I have very little information on this family. Their son Joseph DAVIES b. 1848 in Tredegar became a Baptist Minister. Benjamin DAVIES passed away before 1861 and I have been unable to find anything on him. Hoping to connect with relatives. This is a great site. Thanks, Carol in Canada

The wonderful weather has kept me outdoors until a few minutes ago, and I was surprised when I switched on my computer just now to find some really helpful and interesting responses to my query about Colliery Row from MON list members. You have pointed out so many avenues for me to explore. I was interested to see that there were only 3 cottages in Colliery Row. The person I have an interest in was a William CORDEY who was living as a lodger with the BACON family, who, as far as I know, were not connected to any ancestors of mine - (but you never know!) Huw has helped me before and as usual has provided me with a wealth of information which will take some time to absorb. Steve has helped me previously when I contacted the list about Cwm Byr Farm, but I hadn't realised that there was a colliery of the same name until now. I would be interested in finding out more about that. The map showing the position of the row of cottages was very helpful as was the explanation of the parish/administrative area of Machen Lower including the area over the mountain to the river Ebbw. When I was a child living near Pontypool I had no idea that any of my ancestors were from the Risca area and now I find I have an interest in the names MORRIS, MORGAN, THOMAS, COLE, KENVYN, as well as CORDEY, and it amazes me that I must have passed the places where they all lived many times as I used to get off the Western Welsh bus at Pontymister crossing to walk over the mountain to Lower Machen village and on to the village of Draethen to visit relatives. Thanks again to everyone who replied to my query, I appreciate your interest and help very much, Judith

Hiya Judith Colliery Row, Lower Machen was actually in Risca. The parish of Lower Machen extended to the river Ebbw which runs through Risca, although Machen is the other side of the mountain. That's why parts of Pontymister and Risca which were one side of the river are in L Machen. My Dixons are on the same page as your family, and as far as I can work out Colliery Row is near the Blackvein Colliery. (now gone) If you go to www.oldmaps.co.uk and type in 323124,191309 as the coordinates the centre of the map will show more or less where Colliery Row was. Click on the enlarged view and look for Madart Cottage. To the right is Cwm Byr Colliery and down a bit is a Well. In front of this is the river and then a row of houses. I believe these houses are Colliery Row, unless someone else can tell me different. If it wasn't so dark at the moment I'd be able to see the site, now trees, from where I'm sat. If you want any more help email me off list. There is an excellent book Man of the Valleys about William Paget who used to live in Colliery Place which is in the same area. Dear Listers, Update at 3:30 pm UK time. It appears that since my earlier message, the Old-Maps website has reverted, at least for a while, to its original scheme, presumably because the redesigned system was generating too many errors.
